This is a non-sworn position in the Topeka Police Department that is responsible for the enforcement of animal control and licensing ordinances in the City. This position also works with neighborhood organizations, pet owners, camps and schools to educate the public and become more proactive in pet care and safety issues. What you'll do: Responds to calls and patrols the city to capture unleashed, unlicensed, dangerous, diseased, and injured animals; investigates reports of animal neglect, vicious animals, and injured domestic or wildlife animals. Perform inspections related to care and safety of animals. Prepare paperwork and file appropriate reports, investigate and follow up; prepare for and provide testimony in court as required. Provide education related to pet owner responsibilities and licensing ordinances to numerous partner organizations and agencies in the community.
The ideal candidate:
Has excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively, confidently and professionally with a diverse audience. Has the ability to remain calm and maintain a professional demeanor in difficult and hostile situations and de-escalate and resolve problems quickly Possesses knowledge of different breeds of dogs, cats, and other animals. Is highly organized with the ability to exercise sound judgement.Minimum Qualifications:
High School diploma or equivalent is required; some college coursework is preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license and meet City insurability guidelines. Must meet qualifications to work as a police agency employee, including passing an extensive background check.
