Shelter Administrator Scotland County Humane Society Laurinburg, NC Position Overview The Scotland County Humane Society is seeking a dedicated, motivated, and compassionate Shelter Administrator to oversee the daily operations of the shelter. This is a hands-on leadership position requiring strong organizational skills, initiative, and a commitment to animal welfare. The ideal candidate will work closely with shelter staff, volunteers, veterinarians, local government agencies, and the Board of Directors to ensure the shelter operates efficiently while providing the highest standard of care for homeless animals. This is a hands-on leadership position requiring active involvement in the daily operations of the shelter. The Shelter Administrator is expected to maintain a thorough understanding of every animal currently in the shelter's care, including their medical status, behavior, placement plans, and overall welfare. The successful candidate will lead by example and be willing to assist with both administrative and animal care responsibilities as needed. Responsibilities Oversee daily shelter operations and ensure efficient workflow among staff and volunteers. Manage administrative functions including reports, licensing, contracts, record keeping, and regulatory compliance. Assist with budgeting, invoice approval, payroll coordination, and financial reporting. Maintain communication with city and county officials, rescue organizations, veterinarians, and community partners. Support shelter programs including adoptions, fosters, rescue transfers, transports, and community outreach initiatives. Ensure shelter facilities, vehicles, and equipment are maintained in a safe and functional condition. Help develop and implement policies and procedures that support animal welfare and operational excellence. Provide leadership, support, and accountability for staff and volunteers. Promote a positive and professional image of the organization within the community. Attend Board meetings and provide regular operational updates and reports. Assist with problem solving and decision-making regarding shelter operations and animal welfare needs. Maintain knowledge of all animals currently in the shelter's care, including medical needs, behavioral concerns, housing assignments, and outcome plans. Work closely with shelter staff, veterinarians, and others to make decisions regarding animal care and placement. Assist with quality-of-life assessments and euthanasia evaluations when necessary. Participate in and, when appropriate, make humane euthanasia decisions in accordance with shelter policies, veterinary guidance, and animal welfare best practices. Qualifications Leadership, management, or supervisory experience preferred. Strong organizational and communication skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Experience in animal welfare, shelter operations, veterinary support, nonprofit management, or a related field is preferred. Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with staff, volunteers, and community partners. Proficiency with computer systems, email, spreadsheets, and record management.
