Job Description

Job Summary:
The Hog Handler tasks to ensure the welfare/well-being of the animals. Tasks include barn sanitation, animal removal, and animal movement.
Responsibilities:
  • Unload, sort, and move live hogs safely and humanely through designated barn and holding areas.
  • Count pigs as they move off trucks and verify counts against shipping and receiving documentation.
  • Monitor animal condition and behavior to identify signs of illness, injury, stress, or fatigue and report concerns to leadership immediately.
  • Maintain proper animal flow while minimizing stress and ensuring compliance with animal welfare standards.
  • Provide hogs with access to water and assist in maintaining proper feed and holding conditions as directed.
  • Clean and sanitize pens, alleyways, gates, trailers, and work areas in accordance with company sanitation and biosecurity standards.
  • Operate gates, sorting panels, water systems, and other barn equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Assist with loading and unloading livestock trailers while ensuring proper handling procedures are followed.
  • Follow all animal welfare policies and procedures including:
  • Providing a physical environment that meets the animal's needs
  • Providing access to adequate water and high-quality feed
  • Providing humane treatment of animals
  • Identifying and appropriately treating animals in need of health care
  • Following approved euthanasia guidelines when necessary
  • Maintain accurate production information and update all department records as required.
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • High School diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous livestock handing helpful.
  • Ability to do hard physical labor.
  • Strong commitment to teamwork.
  • Ability to follow instructions and deal with standardized situations.
  • Weekend, evening, and holiday work required as needed.
  • Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.
  • Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment. Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time throughout the shift.
  • Ability to work in varying environmental conditions including heat, cold, humidity, dust, odors, and wet/slippery surfaces.
  • Frequently lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 pounds; occasional heavier lifting may be required with assistance.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, squat, kneel, climb, and reach repeatedly throughout the workday.
  • Ability to safely handle and move live animals in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Must be capable of repetitive motion involving arms, hands, wrists, and shoulders.
  • Ability to work around loud noise and moving equipment while maintaining awareness of surroundings.
  • Ability to climb stairs, ramps, and catwalks as required
Shift:
Monday through Friday Start time: 6:30am to 3:30pm.
