ANIMAL CONTROL SHELTER ASSISTANT OPERATIONS DIVISION PUBLIC SAFETY DEPARTMENT GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Under general supervision, performs animal care, facility maintenance and administrative task at the animal control shelter. Provides care and socialization of housed animals and maintains the shelter in a clean, safe and orderly manner. Performs related work as required. Works full time with a flexible schedule that may include evenings, weekends and/or holidays. Reports to the Captain of Patrol, Public Safety.SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Answer inquiries from the public, in person, by telephone or email on rules, laws and regulations pertaining to animal control and the animal shelter. Build and maintain positive relationships with the public, volunteers and rescue groups using principles of good customer service. Prepare and maintain records; enter and retrieve data; produce various documents and animal control reports using a computer. Provide food and water for each animal; observe food consumption to ensure animals' overall health; observe animals' behavior and physical appearance; record and report illness/injuries to the Animal Control Officer. Properly clean and disinfect cages and kennels; perform general upkeep of the shelter, including sweeping, mopping and taking out the trash. Exercise animals; replace bedding, toys and litter pans; maintain a clean and safe environment at all times. Administer medication to animals as directed. Maintain isolation of quarantined animals, as needed. Work with animals to socialize them and improve adoptability. Accept animals into the shelter performing preliminary examination, including weighing, vaccinating, microchip scanning, conduct initial assessment of behavior and health and record the information. Monitor kennel security; recommend and implement improvements. Assisting with volunteer management and coordination. Monitor inventory of supplies and request restock when needed. Maintain records on pick-up and release dates, quarantines, adoptions, disposals and the status of animals maintained at the shelter. Coordinate adoptions and release of animals to their owners. Perform duties as assigned.ESSENTIAL SAFETY FUNCTIONS
It is the responsibility of each employee to comply with established policies, procedures and safe work practices. Each employee must follow safety training and instructions provided by their supervisor. Each employee must also properly wear and maintain all personal protective equipment required for their job. Finally, each employee must immediately report any unsafe work practices or unsafe conditions as well as any on-the-job injury or illnesses.ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Performs general building and grounds maintenance as necessary. Performs related duties as required.MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Requires a high school diploma or a GED. One year of prior experience in the handling and care of a variety of animals is preferred.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Physical Requirements:
Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate, though not constant, physical effort, typically involving some combination of driving, walking, climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which involves the lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (up to 50 pounds), and occasionally heavy objects (up to 100 pounds). While performing enforcement work, must be able to defend one's self from attack / assault and to restrain animals and criminal suspects of varying weights.Data Conception:
