Hours/Days:
Regular schedule- Friday through Tuesday This position will be required to work shifts including evenings, holidays, weekends and overtime as necessary by the department and during inclement weather.
FLSA Status:
Non-Exempt Job description: Under the supervision of the Shelter Manager, this position performs operational, administrative and supervisory duties coordinating animal care service at the City's Animal Shelter. Duties include supervising Animal Care and Veterinarian Assistant teams, answering questions from the public, supervising and performing euthanasia, and conducting daily walk-throughs to ensure the health and well-being of the sheltered animals. This position is considered weather essential personnel and will be required to work on an on call and as needed basis as determined by the needs of the department.
Essential Responsibilities:
Assists in the supervision and training of new Animal Care Workers, veterinarian assistants and other Shelter staff and volunteers; makes work assignments and evaluates performance. Oversees the cleaning and sanitation of all kennels, cages, euthanasia, and exam room areas. Cleans and maintains kennels as needed. Serves as back-up for the Shelter Manager in their absence. Assists in the coordinating of the delivery of medications prescribed by veterinarians for the ill and injured animals. Identifies maintenance needs and follows through with the maintenance, repair and replacement of equipment as needed, Maintains detailed records of daily activities. Oversees and assists in the reclaim and adoption of animals from the shelter. Oversees and assists in the care and feeding of animals at the shelter. Performs euthanasia as required. Maintains extensive contact with various species of animals. Monitors activity and health of animals, and must be able to detect clinical signs of various animal related diseases. Maintains and logs classified drugs as used for euthanasia and tranquilization. Determines procurement needs regarding inventory, food, supplies and equipment and tracks and works with the office manager to initiate purchases. Assists in the administration of animal vaccinations and documents animal's health history. Reviews animal care medical records to ensure appropriate history and tracking are being performed by subordinate staff. Performs animal care drug dispensing and inventory control, as needed. Performs other job-related duties as assigned. Maintains detailed record of direction to employees and communication with citizens as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Must be able to get along with others and understand complex situations.
  • Knowledge of animal shelter procedures and regulations
  • Knowledge of safety, sanitation and humane environmental conditions of animals and animal shelters.
  • Effective communication and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to safely handle animals, including those with unknown health and temperament.
  • Ability to safely operate a staff or pole, ropes, nets and cameras.
  • Knowledge and ability to safely and humanely perform animal euthanasia in accordance with established protocols and regulations.
  • Ability to safely and effectively prepare lab specimens.
  • Ability to make decisions during emergency and unusual circumstances.
  • Skill in using standard office equipment such as copiers and multi-line phone systems, and computers and related software applications for data entry, word process and accounting purposes.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skill.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Requires a High School Diploma or its equivalent and a minimum of one year of experience in animal care service and responsible shelter experience. Basic Animal Control Certificate for the State of Texas within one (1) year of hire and State of Texas Euthanasia Certification required within one (1) year of hire. Valid Texas Driver's License. Must have or be able to obtain pre-exposure rabies vaccinations within six (6) months of hire.
