Essential Tasks:
The tasks listed below represent the majority of the duties performed in this position. Management may assign additional responsibilities related to the work of the class as needed. Provide daily care for shelter animals, including feeding, watering, grooming, routine testing/exams, and basic wound treatment. Clean and sanitize cages, kennels, and animal housing areas to maintain a safe and healthy environment. Perform daily animal inspections, including animal counts and monitoring/reporting sick or injured animals. Administer prescription medications under the direction of a veterinarian, provide routine vaccinations, and assist with determining animal placement into adoption areas. Assess animals for adoption suitability and overall wellbeing. Interact with the public by providing information about shelter animals and assisting with adoptions. Transport animals to veterinary appointments or grooming services as directed. Maintain euthanasia certification. Assist with routine building and facility maintenance. Complete routine recordkeeping, animal intake documentation, and related reports. Train and provide guidance to new shelter attendants, workforce participants, and community service workers. Required Qualifications Vocational/Educational Requirement:
Requires high school diploma or GED/HSE, and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education. Certificates of completion for specific animal care classes designated by the Animal Services Unit are also required.
Experience:
In addition to satisfying the vocational/educational standard, a minimum of six months of related experience is required.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards . Requires certification in euthanasia determined, by attending veterinarian, to be obtained within one year of date of hire.
Special Requirements:
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties. Preferred Qualifications Experience with Microsoft, Outlook and SharePoint. Prior animal handling experience.
