Job Description

Company Overview The Humane Society of Portage County is dedicated to preventing cruelty, abuse, neglect, and overpopulation of companion animals. Our mission emphasizes the importance of finding loving homes for these animals while fostering humane awareness and respect for all life, ultimately contributing to a better community. Summary The Animal Protection Intern will be an integral part of the Animal Control unit. Animal Control provides a multi-faceted range of services pertaining to domestic animal management within Portage County. Humane Officers provide 24/7/365 and work a rotating "on-duty" schedule. The Animal Protection Intern will assist Humane Officers in the duties of protecting animals and the community they live in. They will learn Wisconsin animal protection laws and best practices of animal welfare. The right candidate will strive to prevent cruelty, abuse, neglect, and overpopulation of companion animals while teaching humane awareness and respect for all life thus assisting HSPC in helping to build a better community. Responsibilities 1. Answer phones and appropriately transfer to the proper department 2. Respond to public concerns regarding animal welfare and practices 3. Complete animal intakes and redemptions 4. Create reports regarding welfare concerns in a timely manner 5. Attend HSPC events and Humane Officer outreach events as requested 6. Transport animals to and from the shelter as necessary 7. Collect stray, abandoned, and at risk animals as needed 8. Assist in investigations as requested 9. Complete any required training in a timely manner 10. Drive the official Humane Officer transit van as needed 11. Assist with HSPC trap rental program 12. All other duties as assigned Requirements
  • Must possess good interpersonal skills and be able to deal effectively with the public in stressful situations.
  • Must possess the oral and written communication skills necessary to handle inquiries from HSPC, and the public
  • Work a rotating schedule of on-duty shifts requiring response at all hours of the day.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs independently.
  • Must be able to effectively present information.
  • Animal handling skills required
  • Good organizational skills and basic computer knowledge are required
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required
  • Must consent to a background check.
  • Must have a good driving record and valid Wisconsin driver's license.
