- 4/17/2026 Key Responsibilities As an Autopsy Assistant you will support and assist in the autopsy area of the Medical Examiner's Office.
This includes:
Preparing for, performing, and cleaning up after external examinations and autopsies. Documenting pertinent findings by photographs, written notes, and x-rays. Collecting tissues and samples for toxicology testing, cultures, research studies, and special testing. Receiving and releasing decedents to and from appropriate agencies. Taking inventory and documenting personal effects and evidence. Entering data into a database for pertinent investigation information. Coordinating with funeral homes, law enforcement, staff, and tissue recovery agencies. Maintaining good working relationships with outside agencies. Instructing residents, medical students, and new staff while complying with policy and procedures. Lifting, transferring, and positioning individuals correctly using approved lifting techniques and procedures. Taking fingerprints using both traditional ink and digital technology. Ensuring there is an adequate supply of autopsy materials available. Ordering, receiving, inspecting, and storing equipment, materials, and/or supplies. Qualifications The Ideal Candidate Has over 4 years of education and/or experience related to anatomy, physiology, biology, pathology, and/or medical training. Is able to scribe and understand medical terminology. Is able to perform medical procedures. Has knowledge of rules of evidence and chain of custody. Is a quick learner, anticipates tasks to be completed, and is well organized. Has a strong and trusted work ethic, and is able to work with limited or no supervision. Is able to work well with others including common sense problem resolution. Has a knowledge of blood borne pathogen precautions. Preference May be given to applicants with four years of education and/or experience related to anatomy, physiology, biology, pathology, and/or medical training. The daily schedule will be typically 7:00 am to 3:00 pm Monday through Friday but will need to begin at 6:30 am occasionally. Rotating weekend on-call shifts and holidays is required. Physical Requirements This job requires physical exertion. You may be required to stand for long periods of time.
