Agency Adult Correction Division COO - Rehabilitation , ReEntry Job Classification Title Substance Abuse Worker (S) Position Number 60056668 Grade NC04 About Us The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Description of Work Substance Abuse Worker positions are full‑time roles within the Division of Rehabilitation and Reentry, NC Department of Adult Correction. These 24/7 residential programs serve probationers and parolees and offer full State benefits, including eligibility for shift premium pay on 2nd and 3rd shifts.
Work Schedule:
Have flexibility to work any shift (3rd, 2nd, and 1st) to staff the 24/7 operation of these facilities; according to the need. Employees may be assigned to work 8 or 10-hour shifts 4 or 5 days a week. Shift Premium Pay is also available in addition to the base salary for employees assigned to 2nd and 3rd shifts.
Key Responsibilities include:
  • Provide paraprofessional support and monitoring in a 24/7 residential substance abuse treatment setting.
  • Communicate effectively with coworkers and treatment professionals to support client recovery.
  • Observe and monitor resident behavior and activities throughout assigned shifts.
  • Document incidents, medical emergencies, and daily events through required shift reports.
  • Maintain a working understanding of basic substance abuse treatment services and program expectations.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Salary Grade Range $31,084 - $54,397 60056668 Is An Anticipated Vacancy The Posting Will Close At 11:59 P.M. The Night Before The End Date Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred: Job duties include, but are not limited to the following: Applying intervention techniques when needed. Setting up, cleaning up, and maintaining the food service and equipment areas. Administering medications as directed by medical staff. Loading and unloading facility supplies, as needed. Transporting residents from across the state to this facility. This may occur at any hour of the day or night while on duty. Monitoring the security of buildings, grounds, and vehicles.
Other Responsibilities:
Required to work weekends and holidays as scheduled. Accommodate modifications to work schedules including hold-over or schedule changes on short notice to provide critical operational needs. Transport residents in departmental vehicles at any time during the night or day while on duty. This may require driving in different types of weather, traffic, or road conditions. Must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license. Must possess CPR Certification or able to obtain within 6 months of hire.

The Rehabilitation and Reentry Division oversees services, programs, and community partnerships aimed at helping individuals reintegrate into their communities following incarceration. Staff members work with people who are incarcerated, probationers, post-release supervisees, and parolees. This division collaborates with prison and supervision staff to create individualized reentry plans, coordinate services, and deliver evidence-based programs to improve outcomes and reduce recidivism.
