Job Description
Primary Purpose of Job The primary purpose of this position is to serve in a temporary/on-call role to manage the safety and security of inmates at the CBS Community Jail ("Jail") consistent with the State of Alaska Standards for Jail Operation. Under the daily direction of the Jail Officer II and the direct supervision of the assigned Lieutenant, the employee works independently on assigned duties and responsibilities. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Supervises inmates in the Jail and ensures facility security within the Police Station
Completes booking and release procedures such as fingerprinting, photographing, and documentation consistent with Alaska Correction Offender Management System ("ACOMS")
Conducts hourly checks by inspecting cells
Documents inmate activities
Provides meals, arranges medical care, and transports inmates to court or hospital
Promotes inmate safety and security and identify and manage inmate behavior and health issues
Supervise activities of visitors, maintenance personnel, and contractors who come to the jail
Performs limited dispatch and police duties (traffic control) as needed
Coordinates with other agencies, such as Department of Public Safety, AST Judicial Services, and Department of Corrections for remand and release of inmates
Cleans the Jail, handles laundry, both facility and inmate, ensures sanitary conditions daily or as needed
Performs other duties as assigned
Knowledge of:
Jail policies and procedures
Current practices and procedures for operating a Jail safely
Guidelines for inmate and facility security
Skills In:
Operating a personal computer and Microsoft software such as Word, Excel, and Outlook and any specialized software for public safety operation
Performing computer entry duties with speed, efficiency, and accuracy
Reading, writing, and mathematics, such as would have been obtained at a high school level
Multi-tasking efficiently and effectively
Organizing, prioritizing, and evaluating the work of others Ability to:
Recognize and maintain confidential information
Physically restrain inmates when necessary
Work under extremely stressful situations which result from responding to emergency situations, including the responsibility for remaining calm and carrying out all duties with the recognition of the threat to life and property
Work within a command structure requiring strict adherence to the following of orders
Dealing with a variety of people calmly and professionally, including times when the situation may be physical or stressful
Make decisions, sometimes quickly, as to the best course of action for responding to emergency situations
Communicate well with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language
Understand and follow oral and written policies, procedures and instructions
Use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and oral instructions
Perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines
Quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge Minimum Qualifications
HS Diploma or GED; and
Some work experience dealing with people in a customer service, with counseling groups, or related area, preferred; and
Experience in general security or law enforcement, preferred; and
Possession of, or ability to obtain within 90 days of initial hire, First Aid and CPR certification; and
Possession of, or ability to obtain within 12 months of initial hire, Alaska Department of Corrections Municipal Correctional Officer Academy certification; or
Any equivalent combination of experience, education, and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work. Other Job Requirements or Expectations
Possession of, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire, a valid driver's license issued by the State of Alaska
Must wear uniform within specified standards
Will be required to pass background check and drug screen
Will be required to work different shifts including early mornings, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays and be on-call
Working Conditions:
Indoor jail facility at the Police Station or in a Police vehicle with associated potential hazards and personal injury or danger
Specific Physical Requirements:
Frequently restrains and controls inmates of both genders and physical builds
Frequently stands, sits, and walks
Frequently bends, stoops, reaches, grasps, and kneels
Frequently lifts, pushes, or pulls up to 20 pounds
Frequently balances, crouches, climbs, and crawls
Occasionally operates office equipment requiring repetitive hand and arm movement and coordination using a computer and keyboard
Occasionally lifts, pushes, or pulls up to 50 pounds, with or without the assistance of proper equipment or the help from another
General Physical Requirements:
Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities which permits the employee to communicate effectively and respond to or interact with inmates
Sufficient vision or other powers of observation which permits the employee to monitor public safety functions, inmate behavior and activities, and ensure a safe workspace
Sufficient manual dexterity which permits the employee to care for, restrain, and control inmates
Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes which permits the employee to access all areas of the jail
