Salary $25.81 - $34.85 Hourly Location 42507 W. Peters and Nall Road, Maricopa, AZ 85139, AZ Job Type FTNonExempt Job Number 26-00054 Department Law and Order-Detention Opening Date 05/13/2026 Closing Date Continuous Summary Under general supervision, performs a variety of activities associated with booking, release, and detention of prisoners in a detention facility. Detention Officers may be assigned to a day, swing, or graveyard shift on a regular rotational basis that includes working nights, weekends, and holidays. Minimum Qualifications Experience equivalent to one year full time detention, correctional, or closely related criminal justice work. Will be required to attend a AZ Correctional Officer Training Academy (COTA) or Basic Corrections Officer Training Program. Must have a valid Arizona Driver's License and be able to meet the Community's insurance carrier requirements (no DUI/DWI convictions within the last 5 years.) Must be able to pass an extensive background check, which includes polygraph test, psychological evaluation and physical exam. Examples of Duties Books prisoners into detention center, including photographing/fingerprinting prisoners, searching prisoners, inventorying/storing personal property, filling out required paperwork, and recording the booking process in the appropriate log books and records systems. Operates/monitors video surveillance system/equipment. Transfers prisoners between cells. Escorts prisoners within the facility for meals and other activities. Restrains combative, argumentative, and/or suicidal prisoners. Determines if prisoners are ill/injured and administers/obtains appropriate medical treatment. Determines release criteria for prisoners according to established policies/procedures. Coordinates with Court staff when bond is posted. Prepares and distributes appropriate paperwork when prisoners are released or transferred. Cleans detention facility as needed. Performs other work-related duties as assigned. Other Requirements Knowledge of basic criminal justice/law enforcement principles and practices. Knowledge of Federal and Community laws, codes, and regulations related to prisoner detention. Knowledge of Community Detention Center policies and procedures, including booking/release processes, bond procedures, and established safety and security requirements. Knowledge of Court processes relating to prisoners. Knowledge of the use/operation of a variety of equipment used to monitor and restrain prisoners. Knowledge of basic principles of human behavior. Knowledge of basic recordkeeping and report preparation practices and techniques. Skill in operating a variety of equipment used in monitoring/restraining prisoners. Skill in performing the activities required to book and release prisoners. Skill in applying standard first aid/CPR procedures and techniques. Skill in handling combative, intoxicated, and/or argumentative prisoners. Skill in preparing and maintaining accurate records. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other law enforcement agency and regulatory agency/organization staff, Community officials, criminal justice staff, and the public.
