Job Description
COUNTYWIDE PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITY - CORRECTIONAL SERGEANT OPEN TO CURRENT, REGULAR COUNTY OF NEVADA EMPLOYEES WHO HAVE COMPLETED TWELVE MONTHS OF SATISFACTORY, PROBATIONARY SERVICE. INTERVIEWS FOR QUALIFIED CANDIDATES WILL BE HELD ON JULY 15, 2026
Under direction, supervises shift operations in the jail; determines special housing and handling of ill or combative inmates, or inmates requiring unique handling due to the nature of their charges; notifies chain of command of emergencies and responds to emergencies within or outside the facility; provides clarification of policy and procedures to staff and inmates; performs correctional duties; and performs related work as required. This is a working supervisory-level position with oversight responsibility for a moderately sized group of corrections officers and related support staff. This class is distinguished from Correctional Lieutenant, who supervises this class and has greater delegated authority and broader responsibility for a larger group of staff. Equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by education and training in peace officer and correctional officer standards and practices AND three years of experience at a level equivalent to the Correctional Officer II classification in Nevada County.
Licenses and Certificates:
Possession of a valid driver's license within 30 days of hire. Compliance with all relevant pre-employment and post-employment training requirements of Penal Code sections 830 through 832 and section 6035, including firearms and arrest and seizure certification prior to employment; State Board of Corrections mandated core training prior to employment, and supervisor training within twelve months of employment. Must be re-certified on an annual basis.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
Strength and agility to restrain people alone and with the assistance of others while wearing a duty belt and ballistic vest, and to lift or maneuver people weighing more than 165 pounds; ability to perform the full range of reaching, bending, grasping and climbing movements; manual dexterity to operate restraints, firearms, pod consoles, and computer keyboards; wearing respiratory protection equipment; vision sufficient to qualify for firearms certification; speech and hearing to communicate in person and via telephone and radio. Working in a closed, stressful and noisy environment which may include exposure to communicable disease, violent behavior, and physical altercations. Must work on-call, weekends, holidays and/or additional hours outside regular schedule. Other Requirements:
Must submit to and pass a psychological evaluation, medical examination and a background investigation. Must be able to obtain United States citizenship within one year of appointment.
