Job Description

Under general supervision, performs a variety of entry-level support activities. Work includes varied sanitation, cleaning, utility duties as well as basic computer terminal operation when applicable to assigned area. Work involves controlling access to and within the corrections facility/housing unit. Employees coordinate and document all movement within the corrections facility/housing unit on an assigned shift. Position monitors closed circuit television cameras, telephones, alarm systems, intercom panels and/or control panel doors. Work may involve working around inmates, such as in escorts or in supervision. Employees will follow prescribed security procedures and departmental regulations by performing related work as directed. Position may require shift work as directed to ensure the efficient and effective operations of the Corrections and Judicial Services Bureau.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this position. It is not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the class. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment to the position. Performs various support activities according to area and shift of assignment, i.e., sanitation, lawn maintenance, small engine repair, and utility duties. Duties include the custodial responsibility of minimum custody inmates in the community while on job assignment. These duties include addressing and monitoring inmate behavior, ensuring custody, feeding, and obtaining medical assistance when/if necessary. Duties can include supervision of inmates while cleaning, painting surfaces, waste collection, sanitation of restroom facilities, or other duties assigned. Provides instruction in the safe and proper use of small hand tools and power tools applicable to the work assignment. Follows all prescribed procedures relevant to assigned function for the purpose of safeguarding all property, facilities, and persons within scope of responsibility. If assigned, will be responsible for maintaining daily fuel and work logs, and daily inmate evaluations. May operate a vehicle when applicable to assigned functional area. Ensures the proper operation of all electronic functioning doors and security devices/alarms; controls access to and within the detention facility/housing unit; controls exit and entry to doors and hallways. Alerts certified personnel to conditions or circumstances which may inhibit the efficient operations of the facility; provides recommendations for resolution as appropriate. Monitors closed circuit television cameras, telephones, alarm systems, intercom panels and/or control panel doors. Monitors and maintains visual and verbal contact with the housing unit deputy to ensure safety and security, monitors safety of deputies, visitors, and inmates. Coordinates and documents unit activities, movement, etc. on various forms, logs, and reports in electronic and/or handwritten format as required by position function or supervisor direction. Accountable for all keys, restraining devices and all other emergency equipment assigned to the post. Monitors in-house radio transmissions to maintain an awareness of activities in other areas of the assigned facility. Receives security calls or security checks from designated posts. Alerts appropriate personnel of security violations and potentially threatening situations. Checks identification of all persons entering/exiting controlled areas. Generates work orders for non-working equipment. Serves as a communications liaison in the event of an emergency in the corrections facility/housing unit. Communicates with inmates in housing units via the intercom system to direct, advise and provide verbal commands to assist deputies, maintain order, and ensure compliance with facility rules and regulations. Uses a computer terminal for data input and retrieval of various inmate information, as applicable to assigned functional area. May be subject to random drug testing.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma required. If applicant served in the military, an honorable discharge is required.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Possession of valid Florida driver's license and maintenance of a clean driving record required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation. Some physical effort and/or minimal dexterity in use of fingers, limbs or body in operation of office or shop equipment are required. Work is performed in usual office conditions with rare exposure to disagreeable environmental factors. Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination.
