The Prisoner Transport Officer is responsible for the transport, control, and security of prisoners from the arrest site / book-in location to designated jails, the City of Smyrna Municipal Court, medical facilities, and other designated locations. The position will provide administrative support to the police department's clerical and support staff as assigned.MAJOR DUTIES
1. Processes inmates at the Smyrna Police Department holding facility if they can post bond within a reasonable time. 2. Completes all prisoner intake paperwork and bonds paperwork when applicable. 3. Picks up bonding paperwork and securities from designated jails and transports them to the police department. 4. Picks up and transports prisoners to and from designated jails or municipal courts as assigned. 5. Provides detention services at designated jails for remote court appearances. 6. Transports inmates to and from court, medical appointments, and other scheduled appointments. 7. Provides security for prisoners at medical facilities until they are discharged or relieved of duty; obtains prisoner medical files as needed. 8. Stands by with juvenile detainees as needed. Prepares required reports, including incident reports, and completes miscellaneous incident reports related to the transport and care of prisoners. 9. Provides clerical support to police administration as assigned. 10. Performs related duties as assigned.KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
1. Knowledge of inmate security principles. 2. Knowledge of departmental, city policies and procedures, and federal, state, and local laws and regulations. 3. Knowledge of inmates' constitutional rights. 4. Knowledge of emergency operations procedures. 5. Knowledge of correctional institution security principles. 6. Knowledge of tactical defense and restraint procedures. 7. Skill in planning, organizing, and decision-making. 8. Skill in maintaining records and preparing reports. 9. Skill in public and interpersonal relations. 10. Skill in community policing practices. 11. Knowledge of CPR and basic first aid. 12. Knowledge of computers and related software programs. 13. Skill in using communications equipment and other standard and specialized tools. 14. Skill in analyzing problems and developing and implementing solutions. 15. Skill in supervising inmates. 16. Skill in oral and written communication.SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Prisoner Transport Supervisor assigns work using general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.GUIDELINES
Guidelines include related state and federal laws, city policies and procedures, and departmental policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

- Successful performance helps ensure the safety and security of inmates, personnel, and the public.

- Contacts typically include co-workers, other city employees, attorneys, judges, court system personnel, medical personnel, probation officers, parole officers, representatives of law enforcement or correctional agencies, arrestees, inmates, family members, clergy, and members of the public.
- Contacts are generally made to exchange information, resolve issues, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts heavy objects, climbs ladders, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
- The work is typically performed in an office and in a detention facility.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED and at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must complete an 80-hour Basic Jail Officer Course within 12 months of hire or placement.
- Must possess a valid Georgia Driver's License and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
- Must pass an extensive background investigation, post-offer psychological, medical, and drug screen.
