BARAGA CORRECTIONAL FACILITY, MARQUETTE BRANCH PRISON, ALGER CORRECTIONAL FACILITY, NEWBERRY CORRECTIONAL FACILITY, CHIPPEWA CORRECTIONAL FACILITY, KINROSS CORRECTIONAL FACILITY
The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) is committed to maintaining safe correctional facilities and to prevent sexual abuse and harassment in correctional facilities. This position functions as one of five regional Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Specialists in the PREA Investigations Unit. As the PREA Specialist for a specific region, this position maintains the integrity and professional excellence of MDOC's PREA program ensuring timely and thorough investigations of allegations of employee and prisoner sexual abuse and sexual harassment. This position provides training and guidance to PREA coordinators and supervisory staff. Experience Corrections Investigative Officer 12 Three years of experience conducting either broad-based criminal investigations or employee disciplinary investigations equivalent to a Corrections Investigative Officer, including one year equivalent to a Corrections Investigative Officer P11. Corrections Investigative Specialist 13 Four years of experience conducting either broad-based criminal investigations or employee disciplinary investigations, including two years equivalent to a Corrections Investigative Officer P11 or one year equivalent to a Corrections Investigative Officer 12. Alternate Education and Experience Corrections Investigative Specialist 13 Education typically acquired through the completion of high school and six years of experience conducting broad-based criminal investigations or employee disciplinary investigations; OR five years of experience as a Corrections Shift Supervisor 13, or Corrections Security Inspector 13 may be substituted for the education and experience requirements. OR Possession of a bachelor's degree and three years of experience as a Corrections Shift Supervisor 13, or Corrections Security Inspector 13 may be substituted for the experience requirement. Knowledge of PREA standards. Knowledge of investigative methods and techniques. Ability to conduct investigations and analyze findings in conjunction with applicable policies and procedures. Knowledge of interviewing techniques and ability to effectively interview with probative methods. Knowledge of report writing methods and procedures and the ability to prepare detailed reports of findings. Knowledge of computers and Microsoft Word and the ability to type. Possess analytical skills and the ability to observe critically and determine appropriate course of action. Knowledge of laws, statutes, contracts, policies, and procedures related to work. Knowledge of record keeping systems. Ability to maintain records, prepare reports, and correspondence related to the work. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Possess interpersonal communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with others. Goal and task oriented and self-motivated and ability to work Independently. Special Requirements, Licenses, and Certifications Positions in this class are test-designated and subject to pre-appointment and random-selection drug and alcohol testing. Willingness to submit to a thorough background investigation. Absence of a criminal record or other circumstance which would prohibit the applicant from receiving, possessing, and carrying a firearm, or would prevent the applicant from obtaining a concealed weapons permit. Possession of a valid Michigan operator's or chauffeur's license. The Department of Corrections may screen out applicants who have been convicted of a felony in accordance with Public Act 191 of 2017. Applicants who have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony are ineligible for employment with the Department of Corrections until satisfactory completion of any sentence imposed, including parole or probation. New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification. All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non-custody new employee training.
