EX1018 Incumbents in this position supervise Correctional Officers and facility operations during an assigned shift.Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Supervises all shift operations in correctional facility, including planning, organizing, directing and evaluating work assignments of subordinate staff in accordance with established policies and procedures, enforcing rules and regulations of the Division, counseling staff to identify and resolve problems and developing strategies for improvement. Responsible and accountable for all custody staff on their assigned shift including preparing performance appraisals of first-line supervisory staff and signing and approving ratings for line staff under their supervision, documenting recommendations for corrective and disciplinary actions, resolving informal grievances at the first step, and interviewing applicants and recommending hires, transfers or promotions. Maintains records, log books, and daily shift reports. Oversees count procedures, shakedowns, facility inspections, etc. to ensure safety and security of staff, visitors, and inmates housed in the institution as prescribed by policy. Conducts and/or ensures performance of daily safety and sanitation inspections ofthe institution, including inmate housing units, common areas, secure and non-secure work areas, outdoors areas including perimeter of building, etc. and ensures resolution of any problems discovered. Responds to and manages critical incidents throughout assigned Correctional facility. Manages emergency situations including investigations, gathering information, securing incident area or crime scene, and documenting and reporting all pertinent information in accordance with Divisional policy and procedure. Operates security equipment such as handcuffs, two-way radios, locking devices, automated control doors, closed circuit camera monitoring systems, touch screens, and the facility management computer system (JMS).Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Requires the ability to perform basic level of data analysis including the ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize and/or reference data, statutes and/or guidelines and/or group, rank, investigate and diagnose. Requires discretion in determining and referencing such to established standards to recognize interactive effects and relationships.Human Interaction:
Requires the ability to provide first line supervision. Ability to persuade, convince, and train subordinates, detainees and visitors. Ability to advise and provide interpretation regarding the application of policies, procedures and standards to specific situations.Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use:
Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or provide simple but continuous adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools such as restraint devices, nightstick, handgun, two-way radio, computer terminal, locks/keys, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.Verbal Aptitude:
Requires the ability to utilize a variety of advisory data and information such as regulations, activity logs, incident reports, medication records, repair forms, visitor's log, performance evaluations, work schedules, attendance records, personnel policies, technical operating manuals, purchase orders, statutes, procedures, guidelines and non-routine correspondence.Mathematical Aptitude:
Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.Functional Reasoning:
Requires the ability to apply principles of influence systems such as supervision, managing, leading, teaching, planning, coordinating and controlling. Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such irate individuals, intimidation, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.Physical Requirements:
Requires the ability to lift objects up to fifty (50) pounds such as supplies, and push and pull objects up to one hundred pounds (100) such as supply carts. May require the ability to sustain sufficient physical force to restrain or subdue detainees. Requires the ability to stoop, crouch, balance, climb, bend, twist and run in performing a variety of correctional duties.Sensory Requirements:
Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of shapes, sounds and odors associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks to recognize objects clearly to observe detainees and sounds and odors to detect irregularities in security and detect contraband.Other Requirements:
Work involves shift, weekend, holiday and mandatory overtime assignments. Shift differential of 1% is paid for evening, night and weekend shifts. Qualifications A Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Sociology or a related field; plus two years of experience supervising Correctional Officers in a federal, state or local correctional institution or detention facility. OR , an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.Scoring Components and Their Weights Experience and Training:

City Residence Preference Points City residents who pass an examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive any other preference will receive a five (5) point preference on a scale of 100 points on the exam. An additional one (1) point shall be added to the passing score of City residents who receive any other preference on a scale of 100 points. City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points.
