Job Overview We are seeking a dedicated Corrections Officer to maintain safety, security, and order within Seward County's Detention Center. This role involves supervising inmates, enforcing facility rules, and ensuring a secure environment for staff, inmates, and visitors. 1.
GENERAL FUNCTIONS
This is a direct contact entry-level position in a correctional facility. Work involves providing security and care to incarcerated individuals, ensuring inmate safety, enforcing rules and regulations, maintaining order, escorting inmates, and supervising various inmate activities and programs. Wok also involves providing input into the treatment of individual inmates and the correctional facility population in general through reporting observations to counseling, medical and supervisory staff. Work is performed under the general supervision of a superior with work reviewed in the form of reports, conferences and observations.
II. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervise inmate activities including recreation, personal visits, telephone calls, educational or religious activities, meals, trustee duties, and related activities of daily living.
- Provide inmates with necessary housing articles such as bedding, toilet items, and linens.
- Complete oral and written reports as required.
- Prevent and control volatile situations among inmates.
- Conduct inmate checks, searches and shakedowns for contraband control.
- Escort inmates outside of the facility to schedule medical or legal appointments.
- Listen to inmate's questions and/or grievances and resolve or refer problems/issues to appropriate staff.
- Dispense medications at the direction of medical staff
- Document inmate activities and relevant incidents
- Conduct booking and release process
- Operate master control

- Some knowledge of the criminal justice system

- Ability to read, understand, and learn to describe details accurately and completely in written form.
- Ability to perform computer data entry and word processing
- Ability to observe and assess inmate behavior for signs of potential suicide, riot, and/or other violent behavior.
- Ability to respond to medical and life threatening emergencies
- Ability to effectively communicate with outside agencies, inmates, attorneys, co-workers, and the public in a cooperative and professional manner.
- Ability to learn to respond quickly and effectively to situations which threatens the security of the facility.
- Ability to learn and employ effective self-defense methods
V. DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- College level course work in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, Human Services or related field and some experience in the following, or any combination thereof: a correctional setting, as a counselor in a social setting, in law enforcement work, in the military, particularly in law enforcement or corrections, or with responsibility for individuals in other institutional settings.
VI. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be legally able to work in the U.S.
- Must be at least 19 years of age or older
- Must have a high school diploma or GED
- Must be jail certified or receive jail certification within one (1) year of employment in accordance with Nebraska Jail Standards. Seward County will assist an uncertified applicant/employee with obtaining this certification.
- Must have valid Driver's License
- Must be fingerprinted at the time of employment and the fingerprints cards promptly submitted to the Nebraska State Patrol for a criminal history search: must not have had any convictions punishable by imprisonment in a federal or state penitentiary for one year or more unless pardon received.
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds
VII. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to pass a written exam, background check, drug and alcohol screen, and pre-employment psychological screening, and/or physical assessment.
- Must pass a local and national level security clearance review.
- Must complete and pass or have current certifications in defensive tactics, CPR, AED and first aid training.
- Must maintain a personal phone.
VIII. WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL EFFORT
- Potential volatile situations among inmates.
- Outside weather conditions.
- Possible physical exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous substances.
- Requires to stand and sit for long periods of time.
- Requires occasional lifting and or moving of objects.
- Requires moving from place to place within an office, occasionally stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and reach for items above and below desk level.
- Operate detention vehicles.
- Walk up and down stairs.
- Speak and hear to communicate in person, on the telephone, and radio.
- Operate restraint equipment, electronic security devices, control systems, keyboards, and monitors.
- Officers are required to remain physically fit without medical conditions that pose a threat to oneself or others.
- Officers must also have the strength, endurance, agility and coordination to perform the jobs essential functions including self-defense and inmate restraint.

Constant, up to 80% of shift or as needed

Frequent, stair climbing may be involved
