Job Description
The Erie County Sheriff's Office is building an ongoing eligibility list for both full-time and part-time Corrections Officer. Candidates must also fill out the department application, found at www.eriecounty.oh.gov/EmploymentOpportunities.aspx

Subject to interview / background investigationJOB RESPONSIBILITIES
: Under general supervision, the Corrections Officer observes, secures, supervises, and ensures the general welfare of incarcerated adults in the county jail and performs other duties specifically assigned by the Sheriff and/or designee.WORKING CONDITIONS
: The Corrections Officer is expected to work irregular hours, expanded and rotating shifts for twenty-four (24) hour coverage.ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES
:Security Operations:
- Operate and control all electronic door panels.
- Monitor inmates in adjacent housing units.
- Observe inmates in special units.
- Observe inmate movement.
- Search inmates and their belongings, as needed. Notify Corporals and/or Shift Supervisor of problems.
- Call for back-up assistance, as necessary.
- Inform replacement shift of ongoing issues.
- Perform bed checks, check locks and inspect facility for security infringements and violations.
Intake and Release:
- Conduct computer inquiry for outstanding wants/warrants.
- Conduct intake procedures: Interview inmates and complete medical and other intake information.
- Conduct release procedures.
Jail Operations and Inmate Supervision:
Supervise the inmate housing units, recreation and activities and inmate/visitor interactions.- Supervise inmates assigned to maintenance and grounds upkeep.
- Inspect the jail facility including individual units and dayroomsAdminister corrective action, as necessary.
- Obtain program listing and staff briefings and review program schedule.
- Schedule inmates' attendance and arrange escort.
- Distribute and collect commissary and library request forms from inmates.
Collect books, as necessary.
- Maintain a log of all incoming and outgoing mail.
Inmate Escort:
- Escort inmates and visitors to and from visitation.
- Escort inmates to and from medical center.
- Provide security during medical treatment/exams.
- Escort inmates to and from program services.
Miscellaneous:
Prepare and maintain records and reports. Attend meetings and serve on temporary committees, as requested.- Maintain and increase knowledge and skills through attendance at meetings, conferences, training seminars and in-service training sessions. Perform additional duties and assignments as required.

:Knowledge of:
Department policies and procedures. No criminal record. Local and state ordinances and laws. Criminal and civil rights laws. Jail standards. Electronic security systems, equipment and operations. LEADS operation. Security practices and procedures and security search techniques. Safety procedures and techniques. Inmate observation and control techniques. Inmate intake procedures and requirements. Radio communications and radio codes. Document preparation, requirements and methods.Skill and Ability to:
Operate security and monitoring equipment. Operate radio and electronic communications systems. Operate computer. Interact with and respond appropriately to inmates. Communicate effectively in written and oral form. Collect, classify and maintain information and records. Recognize dangerous and emergency situations and respond appropriately. Resolve problems involving several variables. Demonstrate physical ability necessary to perform duties outlined in the Minimum Standards for Jails in Ohio. Perform First Aid and CPR procedures.
