Job Description

Detention Center Correctional Officer (Class II) Sumter County is Seeking a Detention Center Correctional Officer (Class II)
Starting Salary:
$45,000 Position Overview Maintains safety and security within the detention center by supervising inmates, conducting booking and release procedures, and ensuring compliance with facility rules and regulations. Supports daily operations, monitors inmate activity, and protects the welfare of staff, inmates, and the public.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
Inmate Intake & Release Processes inmate intake, including identification, fingerprinting, classification, and documentation Conducts background and medical screenings and inventories personal property Completes inmate release procedures in accordance with established protocols Security & Facility Operations Patrols the detention facility and conducts regular headcounts Searches inmates and housing areas for contraband Monitors surveillance systems, radios, and facility access points Responds to emergencies and incidents to ensure safety and control Inmate Supervision & Care Supervises inmate movement, housing assignments, and daily activities Enforces rules, regulations, and behavioral expectations Ensures inmates receive meals, medical attention, and access to hygiene supplies Addresses inmate concerns, complaints, and inquiries Transportation & Support Transports inmates within the facility and to external locations (court, medical, work assignments) Assists with specialized programs such as work release or house arrest Supports courtroom security and population management efforts Reporting & Documentation Maintains accurate records including booking logs, incident reports, and daily activity logs Prepares and submits reports in compliance with policies and procedures Training & Equipment Attends required training and maintains certifications Operates equipment including firearms, restraint devices, communication systems, and vehicles Inspects equipment to ensure proper working condition and safety Additional Duties Assists with facility operations such as laundry, mail distribution, and supply management Provides first aid/CPR when necessary Performs other related duties as assigned
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Knowledge of detention center operations, security procedures, and inmate supervision practices Understanding of applicable laws, regulations, and inmate rights Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions in high-stress or emergency situations Strong observation, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations, including inmates, staff, and the public Ability to prepare clear and accurate reports Strong organizational and time management skills Ability to work collaboratively with law enforcement, legal professionals, and medical personnel
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or GED required One (1) to two (2) years of experience in corrections, security, or law enforcement preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience Must successfully complete required training through the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy and obtain certification(s)
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be at least 18 years of age Must possess a valid South Carolina driver's license Must pass background investigation, drug screening, and physical evaluation Must maintain required certifications, including firearms qualification
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods Ability to lift, carry, and restrain individuals of varying weights Ability to run, climb, bend, and respond quickly in emergency situations Ability to exert up to 30 pounds of force regularly Must be physically capable of self-defense and maintaining control in confrontational situations
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a secure detention facility with potential exposure to physical risk and stressful situations May require shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays Regular interaction with inmates, law enforcement personnel, and the public
