This is the entry level in the Corrections classification series. Positions in this classification do not supervise other staff members and operate on 12-hour shifts.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Provides direct supervision of offenders in housing, visitation, and recreation areas; escorts offenders within the Justice Center, as assigned. Monitors prisoner activity, using closed circuit television systems, radios, and intercom systems. Conducts cell searches, security checks, and inmate headcounts in accordance with department procedures. Responds to emergencies within the Jail such as physical altercations, fires, and offender disturbances; uses appropriate levels of force through physical management of combative and volatile offenders as outlined by policies and procedures. Supervises inmate feeding and distribution/collection of food trays. Completes booking and release records, medication charts, logs, and reports; photographs and fingerprints new offenders and sends offender information to the Texas Department to Public Safety. Dispenses prescription medications to offenders; observes offender taking medication and appropriately documents medication records. Administers basic first aid and CPR to offenders, as needed. Operates a variety of equipment including computers, FAX and fingerprint devices, radios, intercom systems, central controls, telephones, and fire extinguishers. May perform peace officer duties if possesses appropriate TCLOSE certification and appointment as a deputy by the Sheriff. Answers multiple-line telephone; answers questions, directs calls, or takes and relays accurate messages, as appropriate. Attends meetings and training sessions. Performs other duties, as assigned.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
Knowledge of corrections facility operations, department procedures and policies, first aid and CPR techniques. Ability to provide offender supervision and security in a corrections facility; ability to follow departmental policies and procedures and directives from supervisory staff; ability to make effective decisions in stressful situations and react quickly and calmly during emergencies; ability to manage disruptive, violent, and assaultive offenders; ability to operate computers, radios, security and office equipment; ability to perform first aid and CPR in accordance with training and accepted procedures; ability to prepare clear and concise reports. Skill in oral/written communication and interpersonal relations.
Physical Requirements and Work Setting:
Works in a well-lighted, air-conditioned environment; prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, bending, and reaching; subject to loud noises and visual acuity, hearing ability, and manual dexterity required. Education and/or
Experience Required:
High school diploma or GED certificate.
Additional Requirements:
Must be a U.S. citizen.
Certificates and Licenses:
Possession of basic certification as a Corrections Officer from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) required within one year of employment. Must possess a valid State of Texas Driver's License.
