Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to meet the requirements for State Jail Certification. Read, write, understand, and follow oral and written instructions. Learn to interpret and apply regulations and laws, such as Sheriff's Office Regulations, Penal Code, and Code of Criminal Procedure. Work to be performed mainly indoors and requires physical dexterity. Must learn to use and care for computer equipment, and deal effectively with the public.
General Definition:
On an assigned shift, perform various tasks of average to moderate difficulty related to a county jail, and performs related work as required. May be assigned to a specialized task of duty. Will assist in the training of less experienced jailers. Conduct book in and release procedures of inmates. Administer medication as prescribed by a doctor. Transport prisoners to and from various locations in and out of the county. Enter data into the computer system as needed. Minimum Duty Requirements
  • Must be able to use weapons, handcuffs and physical force to maintain discipline and order among inmates
  • Must be able to lift at least 50lbs
  • Must be able to type and possess a general competency in computer operation
  • Must have the ability to communicate concise report, both orally and written
  • Must be mature, flexible, intellectually alert, and able to command the respect and confidence of jail staff and inmates alike.
  • Must have the ability to guide, direct and coordinate the efforts of others in the jail staff
  • Must have the ability to analyze and interpret jail rules and procedures
  • Must be able to pass a county physical examination and drug screen and be willing to submit to random drug screening.
  • Must be able to stand or sit for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to relate well with a variety of backgrounds and positively represent the County in those contacts.
  • Must possess a current Texas Driver's License and have an acceptable driving record
  • Must be able to pass State mandatory Basic Jail Certification Exam
  • Perform all duties as directed by the Jail Administrator
  • Perform all duties as directed by the Assistant Jail Administrator
  • Perform all duties as directed by the Jail Lieutenant
