Job Description

MERRIMAC CENTER
Williamsburg, VA Position Overview Merrimac Center, a secure juvenile detention facility, is seeking a Counselor III (Senior Counselor/Rover) for day and evening shifts. This position provides direct supervision of juvenile detainees and supports overall facility operations. The Counselor III serves as an assistant to the Shift Supervisor and may assume full operational responsibility for the Center in the supervisor's absence. Key responsibilities include admissions and releases, control room operations, medication administration, crisis intervention, and ensuring the consistent application of a therapeutic behavior management program. The role also includes training and mentoring new direct care staff. This position is subject to on-call availability and requires flexibility to work nights, weekends, and holidays. Key Responsibilities Provide direct supervision and care of juvenile detainees Conduct admissions and releases Operate the control room and perform medication agent duties Respond to and manage crisis situations Assist the Shift Supervisor with daily operations Oversee and support consistent implementation of behavior management programs Train and support new direct care staff Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; or Associate's degree with two (2) years of experience working with youth in a residential facility, including supervisory duties; or High school diploma with four (4) years of experience working with youth in a residential facility, including staff supervisory duties Additional Requirements Successful completion of a background investigation, including criminal history, child protective services, and sex offender registry checks Physical examination with drug screening Current or ability to obtain a valid Virginia driver's license in accordance with DMV requirements Schedule This position works rotating 8-hour shifts, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays: Two day shifts: 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Two evening shifts:
2:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. Two days off This rotation continues on an ongoing basis.
Compensation Entry Salary:
