Job Description

Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job and/or department. Maintains a secure jail and safe custody of inmates. Is responsible for inmate booking, movements, care, and orientation. Maintains order and discipline among inmates. Safely operates Sheriff' Office equipment and vehicles, files report and testifies in court. Performs the full range of duties as assigned, working independently, and exercising judgment and initiative. The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description . Supervises, controls and monitors inmate behavior/movement in the jail. Detains, or restrains by force if necessary. Subdues resisting or assaultive inmates using maneuvers as trained. Performs security patrols and routine cell checks. Patrols cell areas, corridors and other areas as assigned. Books, searches, and releases inmates by completing various admissions forms, manually and through data entry into the Sheriff's Office computer program. Fingerprints and photographs inmates. Conducts visual and audio surveillance of inmates. Monitors camera screens and exercises full field of vision while supervising inmates. Transports or escorts restrained inmates to court, medical appointments, and other activities. Enforces procedures for secure areas. Reads and suggests updates for Sheriff's Office policy and procedures. Maintains general security of the jail. Stops penetrations or escapes. Pursues fleeing inmates. Performs rescue and other security related duties. Prepares and files incident reports regarding inmate conduct, disturbances, rule violations and other occurrences. Reads, comprehends and processes legal and non-legal documents, including medical instructions, commitment or release orders, summons, criminal statutes, and other documents. Attends hearings and other court functions. Provides information and documentation to the court and county attorney. Testifies in court. Participates during inmate disciplinary hearing boards and administers inmate disciplinary actions. Adheres to current incident command structure. Maintain all issued equipment in a functional and presentable condition. Performs related work as required.
Required Education and Experience:
High school diploma (or GED equivalent) Must complete the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy Detention Officer Basic Training or an equivalent achievement No experience required Any equivalent combination of training, education and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities
Required Licenses or Certifications:
Class C driver's license Must obtain Wyoming P.O.S.T.
Detention Officer Certification Knowledge of:
English grammar, spelling and punctuation Legal terminology and court procedures Modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations Principles, methods, and techniques of investigation including surveillance and gathering, preservation and presentation of evidence Laws of arrest, search, and seizure Skill in: Interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships Performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature Performing basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and ratios Communication, both oral and written Conflict resolution Operating specialized equipment Leadership Ability to: Meet schedules and deadlines of the work Understand and carry out oral and written directions Accurately organize and maintain paper documents and electronic files Maintain the confidentiality of information and professional boundaries Learn and apply the applicable laws, ordinances and Sheriff's Office and regulations Prepare and maintain accurate and complete records Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public, inmates, and other employees Review, evaluate and prepare clear and concise reports Analyze situations quickly and objectively and determine proper course of action

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The position involves heavy physical demands, such as exerting up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.
