Job Description
Reports and transcribes verbatim accounts of official Court proceedings pursuant to standards promulgated by statues, rules, regulations, and policies. Coordinates scheduling for other Court Reporters.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Positions in this class are lead-level Court Reporters. Incumbents are responsible for recording and transcribing a verbatim record of Court proceedings as well as ensuring adequate Court Reporter coverage in the courtrooms. This classification is distinguished from lower-level classifications in the Court Reporter series in that incumbents are responsible for mentoring, training, and scheduling the work of Court Reporters.SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Supervision provided by the Courtroom Services Manager, or designee. Responsibilities include schedule coordination for Court Reporter class. (Essential duties may vary from position to position within this classification. Reasonable accommodation will be made when requested and determined by the Court to be appropriate under applicable law.) Provides lead work coordination and direction for the Court Reporter class which may include interviewing, work product assessment, and scheduling work assignments. Reports and transcribes verbatim statements of all Court proceedings as required. Reads back all or portions of the official court proceedings upon instruction from the judge. Transports, sets up, and maintains personal Court reporting or voice writing equipment at the designated work location. Identifies speakers properly and notes the introduction of exhibits or evidence. Receives and processes transcript requests, estimates cost, and prepares and produces transcripts and copies of transcripts in a timely manner as required by applicable code sections, Rules of Court, and statutes for the requesting parties. Reports proceedings, which may include criminal, conservatorship, mental competency hearings, civil and criminal contempt, juvenile, family law, and writs (i.e. of mandated, prohibition and habeas corpus). Provides Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) services as needed. Attends staff and other work-related meetings, workshops, seminars, and other continuing education opportunities. Serve as a representative of the Court, displaying courtesy, tact, consideration and discretion in all interactions with other members of the Court community and with the public.MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
Performs related duties as assignedKnowledge of:
Principles and practices of Court Reporting. Principles and practices of work scheduling, assignment, and coordination. Legal, medical and administrative terminology, phraseology, documents, and procedures. Grammar, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation. Realtime principles and skills, including writing realtime software. Court reporting and transcription equipment, including connection setup with judicial bench inside the courtroom. Courtroom procedures and protocol. Laws, regulations, and practice relating to Court reporting and transcription.Skill/Ability to:
Stenographically report or voice write at the speed and accuracy specified for licensing by the State of California. Type at a speed of 50 words per minute. Ability to write and read back verbatim Court proceeding on demand. Demonstrate a minimum translation rate of 96% in realtime. Use correct English and proofread accurately. Maintain confidentiality of information that is sensitive in nature. Record Court proceedings verbatim continuously for prolonged periods of time. Follow oral and written instructions. Listen to and understand conversations of the Court to prepare a verbatim record. Be patient, tactful and courteous when dealing with judges and officers of the court, the public and co-workers. Transcribe court proceedings accurately from Court reporting tapes. Adjust to changes in workloads and work under the stress of meetings deadlines. Prioritize workload to meet departmental deadlines. Operate a transcriber, computer and other related office equipment. Punctually arrive at workstation to prepare for Court proceedings.Minimum Qualifications:
Possession of Certified Shorthand Reporter (CSR) license issued by the Court Reporters Board of California, in accordance with Government Code Section 69942. License may be obtained through the use of stenography, voice writing, or both. Certification by the National Court Reporter Association (NCRA) as a Certified Realtime Reporter (CRR).Experience:
One-year experience in the courtroom as a realtime certified Court reporter.LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license.WORKING CONDITIONS

Tolerate a moderate noise level. Crouch, stoop and/or climb.Occasionally Required:
