As part of our commitment, we are seeking a Real-Time Transcriptionist to support students who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have other learning needs by providing live transcription of classroom instruction, discussions, and school activities.General Responsibilities:
The Real-time Transcriber for students with hearing impairments is dedicated to supporting the learning of students who are deaf or hard of hearing. This person must be detail-oriented, have excellent typing skills, and have the ability to use a laptop to record lectures and class discussions accurately and efficiently in real-time.Qualifications:
Typewell certification is required. Strong attention to detail and excellent listening skills. Experience in an educational setting is preferred. Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Excellent English proficiency Proficiency in using laptops and Typewell software.Knowledge/Ability/Skills:
Strong oral and written communication skills Strong listening and memory abilities Ability to initiate and complete work with limited supervision and direction Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the jobPosition Expectations:
Attend all scheduled classes and other student events as assigned to provide real-time transcription services. Maintain the Typewell standards for transcription Use a laptop and Typewell software to transcribe spoken words accurately to provide a concise summary of the content in a meaningful style. Maintain a minimum typing speed of 60 words per minute to keep up with the pace of lectures and discussions. Ability to capture an average of 80% (100% of key vocabulary) of the important information points conveyed in classes and meetings. Ability to use an approved abbreviation system to assist in transcribing speech for rapid communication access. Collaboration withStudents:
Work closely with the student to understand their specific needs and preferences. Provide copies of transcriptions promptly, ensuring the student has access to all classroom content. Collaboration withFaculty and Staff:
Liaise with teaching staff to ensure understanding of class content and terminology. Prepares for classes by reviewing materials and adding pertinent vocabulary to the transcriber dictionary before classes or meetings. Attend staff meetings or training sessions as required to stay informed of any changes in course materials or delivery methods. Coordinate with the special education case manager, teachers, and others to ensure the student's needs are consistently met.Quality Assurance:
Review and edit transcriptions for accuracy and completeness. Ensure that transcriptions are free of errors, omissions, and ambiguities. Keep detailed records of all transcriptions and maintain confidentiality per school district policies.Technical Proficiency:
Stay up-to-date with the latest Typewell software updates and features. Troubleshoot any technical issues that may arise during transcription sessions. Ensure the laptop and transcription equipment are in good working condition and ready for use at all times.Professional Development:
Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities related to real-time transcription and Typewell certification. Stay informed about best practices and new developments in the field of accessibility and transcription services. Seek feedback from students, faculty, and colleagues to continuously improve the quality of transcriptions. Other Duties asAssigned FLSA:
