Job Description
Under general supervision, to perform a variety of crime-related statistical analyses to identify crime trends and develop tactical crime prevention strategies. The County of Santa Clara District Attorney's Office is currently recruiting for one (1) full-time Crime Analyst. The selected candidate must successfully pass a full background investigation prior to appointment. Provides investigative analytical support for major crime investigations that are highly confidential in nature; Maps, records and monitors criminal intelligence utilizing advanced computer software to identify statistical trends in criminal activity; Collects raw data from a variety of law enforcement sources to convert into criminal intelligence information; Gathers data from electronic multi-media sources and performs analysis of digital information to identify crime related activity; Develops and conducts presentations/visual aides to demonstrate findings related to trends/facts of a particular case before law enforcement personnel, the court, and other community stakeholders; Collaborates and confers with Federal, State and local law enforcement agencies to participate in tactical operational planning and development; Provides real-time analytical support in the areas of subject identification and link analysis, and provides various timelines for on-going investigations; Prepares and maintains confidential data, files and reports related to crime analysis; May testify in court; May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required; Performs other related duties as required. Sufficient education, training, and experience to demonstrate the possession and direct application of the following knowledge and abilities:
Training and Experience Note:
The required knowledge and abilities are attained through training and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree. A Degree in Criminal Justice, Computer Science, Information Technology, Criminalistics, Forensics, Statistics, Quantitative Analysis or a related field is desirable; and Two (2) years of analytical experience gathering crime data from various sources including criminal intelligence automated systems, which provided the ability to formulate and present recommendations to professional audiences.Special Requirements:
Ability to travel to alternate locations in the course of work. If driving, possession of a valid California driver's license prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County driver authorization.Knowledge of:
Methods and techniques used in researching, compiling, sorting, evaluating and analyzing statistical or factual criminal/offender information; Law enforcement terminology; Laws, ordinances, and regulations that comply with agency practices and legal requirements; Ethics and confidentiality practices related to data accessed; Data gathering techniques using public and law enforcement databases to identify evidence in crime investigations and crime trends; Principles and practices of statistical and predictive analysis; Crime mapping techniques; Advanced techniques in computer applications and software to enter, access, process and merge a variety of data; Analytical software tools and geographic information systems used to produce reports, identify trends, and support operations; Codes and regulations related to crime statistics dissemination; Law enforcement databases; Report writing techniques.Ability to:
Collect and evaluate criminal intelligence information to develop criteria to measure the reliability of such information; Present findings and recommendations clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing; Maintain confidentiality while dealing with sensitive information; Read and interpret maps and other geographic information systems; Exercise sound independent judgment within established procedural guidelines to make recommendations on crime prevention strategies; Recognize and identify conditions to provide real-time analytical support in tactical operational planning; Provide support in the areas of subject identification, link analysis, charts, timelines, and communications records analysis for on-going investigations; Conduct presentations before various law enforcement agencies and community stakeholders; Testify in court as to the findings of analysis; Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; Represent the department before community stakeholders, law enforcement and the court; Understand the significance of crime analysis as it relates to the community and governmental operations.
