Job Description

Respond to crime scenes to collect, preserve, and document physical evidence using established forensic protocols and procedures. Conduct scientific examination, analysis, and identification of evidence, including fingerprints, photographs, video, and related documentation. Prepare comprehensive reports, case files, and courtroom testimony to support criminal investigations and prosecution. Focus on firearms examinations and other ballistics-related evidence. Assist with the development of a full firearm and toolmark examination. Utilize forensic systems, including AFIS, for fingerprint comparison and identification Process and document crime scenes, including sketching, photography, and evidence collection in potentially hazardous or graphic environments Prepare cases for prosecution, including organizing evidence, completing reports, and developing court exhibits Conduct follow-up investigations, including obtaining and executing search and arrest warrants Maintain effective communication and working relationships with law enforcement personnel, attorneys, and other criminal justice partners Provide training and guidance to agency personnel, cadets, and community members on forensic and investigative practices Provide guidance to investigators, prosecutors, and agency personnel on firearms evidence, safety, and best practices. Assist with the creation and implementation of comprehensive Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that align with international accreditations standards. Assist with the development of a full firearms examination program. Participate in continuing education to develop and maintain technical skills and competency. Be available to attend extended out-of-state training to become a certified Firearms & Toolmark Examiner. Test Fire of firearms for ballistic analysis and process for evidence collection. Performs other duties as required. High school diploma or GED required. Bachelor's Degree (B.A. or B.S.) in a related field preferred. Minimum two (2) years of experience related to crime scene processing Required Valid Colorado Driver's License. Certifications such as Basic Crime Scene Processing (FBI or CBI), latent fingerprint/palm print identification, crime scene digital photography, death scene photography, death scene investigations, bloodstain pattern analysis, and firearms/ballistics preferred. Professional memberships (ICSIA, IAI, RMDIAI, ACSR, RS, & A) preferred. Knowledge of computer systems and digital documentation tools. Working knowledge of federal, state, and local laws related to criminal investigations. Knowledge of crime scene processing techniques and forensic procedures. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills. Ability to multitask and manage multiple investigations or assignments. Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality. Ability to interact effectively with diverse individuals and groups.
