Job Description

DEFINITION
Non-sworn position that performs tasks relating to the recovery, testing, examination, handling, storage, disposal, packaging, and mailing of evidence and property of the Grand Island Police Department. Position is subject to afterhours call outs to assist with crime scenes or search warrants.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision. Exercises no supervision.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Display honest, trustworthy, and ethical behavior when dealing with internal and external customers. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Regular attendance that is punctual and dependable is required. Place items into and release items from evidence and property holding areas. Assist the Police Department with the collection, processing, packaging, preservation and disposal of evidence and property. Prepare written reports. Mail or transport evidence to locations for testing or examination. Make data entries into the department database regarding evidence and property. Duplicate and preserve electronic evidence. Extract digital and analog evidence from electronic devices including but not limited to computers, cellular phones, tablets, laptops, audio and videorecorders and media storage devices in compliance with court accepted best practices. Operate department vehicles. Operate office equipment. Testify in court as necessary. Make local purchases of items for the department. Wait on citizens at the service counter or telephone. Maintain mobile video inventory for police vehicles. Maintain digital cameras. Perform related duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of :
Principles and practices of records maintenance. Police terminology and procedures. Policies and procedures of the Police Department as related to the processing and managing of police records. English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation. Business letter writing and basic report preparation. Modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment.
Ability to:
Be available for afterhours call outs to assist with crime scenes or search warrants. Learn and put into practice court accepted methods for the proper collection and storage of evidence including but not limited to DNA, fingerprints, bodily fluids, hairs, fibers, ballistics, tool marks, documents, currency, drugs, and electronics including digital and analog media. Must be of good moral character. Must be able to read, write, and understand the English language. Speak on the radio and telephone to be easily understood. Work and perform duties without direct supervision and independently make decisions. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Must be able to work in a stressful, large workload environment. Must maintain the confidentiality of information exposed to while performing duties assigned. Must be truthful and honest in all facets of performing duties.
License or Certification:
Employee must possess a valid driver's license and maintain insurability as determined by the City's insurance carrier. Click here to view our driver eligibility requirements. Attend and successfully complete Department provided specialized training required for this position.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES
Any combination of experience and training equivalent to graduation from high school. Previous experience in evidence and property handling preferred, but not required.
Salary:
Position will start at the entry level of the City's salary table. Consideration may be given if experience exceeds entry level qualifications.
Working Hours:
Monday-Friday 8 a.m.- 5 p.m.
Other:
Candidates are subject to a background check. No convictions of driving while intoxicated or related offenses in the past 24 months.
