Job Description

This is responsible supervisory investigative law enforcement work within the Criminal Investigations Section (CIS) for the Leesburg Police Department. The CIS Sergeant supervises Detectives engaged in the prevention, detection, investigation, and prosecution of felony and serious misdemeanor offenses. Duties include supervising investigative operations, managing assigned cases, training personnel, reviewing investigative work product, directing field operations, and serving as the on-scene commander for major incidents. Work requires seasoned judgment in both routine and emergency situations and involves an element of personal danger. The Sergeant works with considerable independence under the general supervision of the Criminal Investigations Section Lieutenant. While the selected candidate is expected to supervise the Criminal Investigations Section's detectives, applicants are advised that the Chief of Police may reassign this position to other lateral Sergeant roles within the department as operational needs dictate. Possession of a high school diploma or GED. Minimum of 10 years of experience as a law enforcement officer and currently certified or have the ability to become recertified in the Commonwealth of Virginia; or equivalent combination of accepted education, training and experience. At least five (5) years of investigative experience, or a combination of investigative and supervisory experience totaling five (5) years. Demonstrated ability to conduct complex criminal investigations, manage caseloads, prepare comprehensive reports, and collaborate with prosecutors and partner agencies. Possession of a valid driver's license and a safe driving record. Must be able to provide testimony under oath in a court of law. Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, criminology, police science, business administration, public administration, or related field. Prior supervisory experience in a law enforcement setting. Experience supervising investigative personnel, major case investigations, task force operations, or specialized investigative units. Advanced investigative training and experience in complex or multi-jurisdictional investigations. Proven leadership, mentoring, and team-development skills. Bilingual in English/Spanish.
