ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW
Green Star of Interior Alaska (GSIA) is a community-driven nonprofit dedicated to waste reduction, recycling, and related education and outreach. We have been a fixture in the Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB) and interior Alaska since 1996. GSIA's simple mission is to encourage and enable waste reduction and increased recycling in FNSB communities and Interior Alaska. GSIA empowers residents and businesses to practice sustainable stewardship in the Interior as the operator of the FNSB Central Recycling Facility (CRF), holder of the Electronics Recycling contract with FNSB for electronics diverted through the CRF, and as regional coordinator and electronics recycling partner for Backhaul Alaska. We also operate the Reuse IT refurbished electronics storefront, operate Repair IT for PC and Mac desktop and laptop computer repairs, Reboot IT, a technology grants program for low income Alaskans and nonprofits, and Rebuild IT computer building classes.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Development Manager is a strategic leader responsible for the sustainability and growth of GSIA's programs. This role focuses on diversifying revenue through aggressive grant procurement, corporate partnerships, and community-based, state and national fundraising, focusing on strategic projects aligned with our simple mission - to encourage and enable waste reduction and increased recycling in FNSB communities and Interior Alaska.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES 1.
Strategic Grant & Foundation Management (50%)
Grant Pipeline:
Lead the research, writing, and reporting for a robust portfolio of local, state and national grants.
Local Partners:
Maintain and expand relationships with key Alaska funders.
Federal Funding:
Identify and target federal opportunities (e.g., EPA, USDA) to support large-scale recycling infrastructure projects and rural outreach. 2. Educational & Workforce Development (10%)
Curriculum Growth:
Secure funding and provide development oversight for ongoing K-12 educational initiatives, ensuring sustainability lessons reach local classrooms.
Technical Programs:
Manage the growth of Computer Building Classes, bridging the gap between waste reduction and digital literacy.
Internship Coordination:
Facilitate funding and coordination ot the expansion of our FNSBSD Work-Based Learning Internships, integrating local students into GSIA's operations to foster the next generation of environmental professionals. 3. Community Access & Outreach Operations (15%)
Remote Recycling Collection:
Secure the resources necessary for remote collection events, prioritizing outreach that promotes awareness and provides recycling access to outlying borough residents. Central Recycling Facility (CRF): Support the long-term operational health of the CRF through diverse funding streams, facility tours and related outreach.
Borrow-a-Bin Program:
Oversee and promote the sponsorship and expansion of our Borrow-a-Recycling-Bin initiative, providing free bins to local events and businesses to encourage diversion at the source. 4. Donor Stewardship & Corporate Relations (25%)
Moves Management:
Cultivate and steward a portfolio of individual donors and corporate sponsors.
Impact Reporting:
Create compelling narratives and annual reports that link donor contributions to tangible metrics, such as cubic yards diverted from the FNSB landfill, number of events utilizing recycling resources we provide, number of CRF, landfill and Electronics Recycing Warehouse tours.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:
3-5 years of progressive experience in nonprofit development, grant writing, or community relations. Familiarity with the Alaska philanthropic landscape is highly preferred.
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Communications, Business, Nonprofit Management, or Environmental Studies preferred but not required.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in donor management software (CRM) and Microsoft Office Suite or similar, Social Media management tools.
Competencies:
Excellent public speaking and written communication skills; ability to translate complex environmental concepts into engaging fundraising appeals.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position primarily operates in an office environment but requires frequent travel within the borough for community events and remote collection oversight. Some evening and weekend work may be required for special events.
