Job Summary Join a mission-driven team in the Drinking Water Protection Unit within Environmental Health and contribute to protecting, maintaining, and improving the health of all Minnesotans. This position provides engineering and compliance support for community public water supplies throughout Minnesota to help ensure safe and reliable drinking water in accordance with the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). The position assists with drinking water compliance activities, water quality investigations, sample collection, project coordination, technical assistance, engineering reviews, and implementation of state and federal drinking water regulations. This role works closely with engineers, water system operators, local and federal partners, and public water supply staff to support public health protection, environmental stewardship, and regulatory compliance across Minnesota communities.
Responsibilities may include:
Assist in implementing and supporting Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) compliance activities for community public water supplies through engineering support, project coordination, and regulatory assistance. Conduct drinking water sampling, investigations, and follow-up activities related to regulated and emerging contaminants to support protection of public health and compliance with state and federal drinking water regulations. Provide technical assistance and engineering support to public water systems, water operators, consulting engineers, and internal staff regarding drinking water regulations, water quality concerns, and corrective actions. Review engineering plans, specifications, and related project documentation for public water supply projects to help ensure compliance with applicable engineering standards, statutes, rules, and sound public health engineering practices. Participate in assigned projects, workgroups, emergency response activities, and statewide initiatives related to drinking water protection, public health, and environmental health programs. This vacancy is being announced at two different job classification levels: Engineer 1 Graduate and Engineer 2 Graduate. Only one position will be filled, and the final job classification of the position will be determined based on the selected candidate's qualifications. MDH relies heavily on grant funding, in addition to state appropriated dollars. As an agency, we continually monitor funding levels and navigate some degree of uncertainty related to grant cycles and the impact of the grant funding on program priorities. This position is currently funded and approved to be filled. While the position is funded at this time, future funding is dependent on the continuation of our funding sources. The Minnesota Department of Health works proactively to sustain programs and maintain our workforce, to avoid reductions in force to the very best of our ability. In the event of a loss of funding resulting in a necessary workforce reduction, that process is governed by our collective bargaining agreements and compensation plans. In accordance with HR/LR Policy #1422 Telework, this position is eligible for up to 50% telework for applicants who live in Minnesota or in a bordering state within 50 miles of the assigned work location. Graduate:
Bachelor's degree or a degree in progress in Civil, Environmental/Sanitary, Chemical, Mechanical or related engineering field. Engineer 2
Graduate:
Bachelor's degree in Civil, Environmental/Sanitary, Chemical, Mechanical or related engineering field. Two years of professional level engineering experience. A Master's degree in Civil, Environmental/Sanitary, Chemical, Mechanical or related engineering field may be substituted for 6 months of direct experience. Additional minimum qualifications to be assesses during the interview process: Ability to communicate technical engineering and regulatory information effectively both orally and in writing to technical and non-technical audiences. Ability to interpret and apply engineering data, drinking water regulations, technical guidance, and compliance information to support public water supply activities. Knowledge of public water supply systems, including drinking water treatment, distribution, sampling, operations, and Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) requirements. Preferred Qualifications Engineer in Training (EIT) certification through the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). Knowledge of engineering principles, practices, and procedures related to drinking water systems, water quality, public health engineering, or environmental compliance work. Experience conducting technical or field-based engineering work, including sample collection, investigations, inspections, or operation of field equipment. Knowledge of public health principles related to waterborne disease transmission and protection of drinking water supplies. Experience effectively prioritizing workloads, managing multiple assignments, and meeting project or regulatory deadlines. Experience using computer software and technical tools to review data, prepare reports, maintain records, and interpret technical documents, maps, gauges, or equipment manuals and produce reports. Physical Requirements Stand and walk even/uneven or sloping ground for significant periods of time, including on snow covered ground, for up to a mile. Lift as much as 50 pounds of equipment or samples and frequently lift from ground to waist height and from waist to shoulder height. Work outdoors in all seasons with inside/outside exposure to weather extremes. Perform gross and fine motor tasks, sometimes with unprotected fingers and hands, in varying indoor/outdoor temperature. Work in small, confined spaces. Work in loud environments for short periods of time.
