- Technical Unit Lead - Tar Spot
YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- You will be part of the North America Breeding Capability Center and play a pivotal role in steering and guiding a cohesive unit focused on orchestrating collaboration across diverse teams specializing in product development, field testing, pathology, data science, phenomics, and seed production with the ultimate goal to lead the unit towards the delivery of innovative and high-quality solutions that meet and exceed the expectations of our customers in the region for TarSpot resistance hybrids.
The unit will consist of employees from Plant Health, Data Science, Product Design, Field Testing, Seed Production, Market Development, etc. Areas of focus within the unit will be pathology, phenomics, germplasm utilization, customer needs, phenotypic selection, advanced analytics, advanced breeding methods, etc. The primary responsibilities of this role, Technical Unit Lead - Tar Spot, are to: + Lead and engage with scientific leaders, research agronomists, and commercial partners to launch approximately ≥50% of hybrids that meet the needs of customers for tar spot resistance and yield for key RMs (100-110) by 2028; + Deliver new product improvement in TarSpot resistance, genetic gain, and digital prescription to create optimal experience for our customers; + Strategically support unit coordination, architecting resource allocations to meet commercial needs within target markets; + Maintain focus on operational excellence, aligning with overarching goals; + Lead the development of a repeatable and scalable inoculation method for both field and CE screening by identifying the key environmental variables that drive disease development under both field and CE conditions; + Establish the necessary infrastructure and capacity to adopt the recommendations from outcomes, adopt high throughput/digital phenotyping for disease data collection, and develop strategy for large- scale collection of opportunistic data; + Lead the development of a method to track discovered genotypes/alleles/haplotypes in CC to enable improved selection for tar spot resistance; + Architect the development and adoption of models with improved selection accuracy for rare tar spot resistance and the development of a tar spot specific recurrent selection breeding scheme; + Ensure the unit strategically delivers on the pipeline, meeting key KPIs in resource utilization, pipeline delivery, and product performance; + Function as a catalyst for continuous improvement, strategically advancing breeding, field, and operations innovations; + Create a pull and process to implement next generation of breeding, field, and operations innovations that continue to accelerate enhancements in the breeding pipeline; + Facilitate collaboration with expertise communities to articulate talent needs; + Request talent resources strategically, providing input and feedback on specific employees aligned with unit and strategic objectives; + Demonstrate and embrace VACC leadership attributes with the unit and with peers and colleagues across Bayer Crop Science; + Be a key contributor to North America Region on technical strategies for corn and across crops; + Strategically drive a focus on SHE, Compliance, Business Conduct, and Human Rights across the Unit in the region, acting as a catalyst for cultivating a strategic culture emphasizing ethical practices, compliance, and environmental responsibility; + Collaborate strategically with peers across Bayer Crop Science to enhance technical strategies for corn and other crops and drives IP strategy for technologies that produce TarSpot resistance hybrids; + Be an active member of regional commercial L2 leadership and product unit teams; + Establish tight linkages and partnerships with HR, IP, other Breeding enabling functions, all Breeding regions, and external experts in the field; + Function as a key partner with Crop Strategy teams, Biotech, Field Solutions, OISP, DFS, Product Management and Supply chain on key Product Teams; + Function as a key partner with Plant Health and pathology across BSC, Product Design and Development pipelines across LATAM, Africa and APAC, to drive germplasm and technology value creation across global commercial portfolios.

Required Qualifications:
- + Master's degree; + Strong knowledge of advanced breeding technologies, advanced analytics and information technologies, genomics, and/or quantitative genetics with a proven history of driving innovation; + Strong ability in collaborating and building cross-functional partnerships to solve business or technical problems; + Demonstrate and embrace VACC leadership attributes, strategically fostering a collaborative culture within the unit.
Preferred Qualifications:
- + Ph.
D. with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in applied Plant pathology/Breeding /Plant Genetics background; + Master's degree with a minimum of 12 years of relevant experience in applied Plant pathology/Breeding /Plant Genetics background; + 10 or more years of relevant experience including technology and/or business strategy development across a diversified agricultural product portfolio and implementation and driving innovation adoption; + 5+ years of experience in leading teams with demonstrated leadership effectiveness in driving technical strategy, innovation and developing people; + 3+ years of experience in Breeding and understanding of US market segments. This posting will be available for application until at least July 1, 2026. Employees can expect to be paid a salary between $183,920.00 to $275,880.00. Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission (if relevant). Additional benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, PTO, sick leave, etc. This salary range is merely an estimate and may vary based on an applicant's location, market data/ranges, an applicant's skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other relevant factors.
