Office of Sustainability & Resilience:
The Office of Sustainability & Resilience leads the City's efforts to promote environmental responsibility, regulatory compliance, and long-term resilience. This team ensures that operations like landfill management meet strict environmental standards while supporting Greensboro's commitment to sustainability.

Role:
The Landfill Technician is responsible for monitoring, maintaining, and documenting environmental compliance systems at the landfill.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly monitoring of landfill systems Monitor landfill gas systems, groundwater wells, methane gas networks, and stormwater systems Document system status, record operational observations, and maintain accurate logs Conduct repairs and routine maintenance on compliance systems Respond quickly to system issues, making sound decisions to maintain safety and compliance Assist with regulatory inspections and serve as a secondary point of contact for state and federal inspectors Ensure all work aligns with environmental regulations and City standards
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:
Work is primarily outdoors (approximately two-thirds of the time) Ability to understand written and oral instructions, Frequent standing, kneeling, crouching, and crawling Ability to lift up to 100 pounds Exposure to fumes, airborne particulates, and potentially hazardous chemicals Work in environments with moderate noise and vibration Operate equipment, including four-wheel vehicles, tractors, mowers, and general tools
Ideal Candidate Attributes:
Strong decision-making skills, especially in time-sensitive situations High level of attention to safety and regulatory compliance Comfortable working independently in outdoor and industrial environments Mechanically inclined with the ability to troubleshoot and repair systems Confident and reliable when responding to urgent system issues Able to accurately document and report technical information Other Position Details Safety and compliance are critical components of this role Position requires quick, sound decision-making to prevent environmental risks and enforcement actions Regular interaction with regulatory agencies may be required

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or G.E.D. Less than 1 year of experience in monitoring of landfill environmental compliance systems, and activities(e.g., landfill gas systems, groundwater monitoring network, methane gas monitoring network, and Stormwater management reporting An Ideal Candidate Would Also Possess (Preferred Qualifications) : Experience with the operation of an all-terrain Four Wheel Drive vehicle. Microsoft Office experience. Field analytical equipment. General office equipment (phones, faxes, internet, scanners, etc.) Experience with weed eaters, mowers, farm tractors, and bushhogs. Experience with OSHA safety regulations, Experience reading and understanding blueprints and drawings
