The general purpose of the position is to protect public health by evaluating and tracking public water systems in New Mexico, to determine compliance with all aspects of New Mexico Drinking Water Regulations and the Safe Drinking Water Act. This position is responsible for managing public water systems' compliance with the revised total coliform rule, lead and copper rule, disinfection by-products rule, the surface water treatment rule, and the PFAS rule, have expert knowledge in the specific rules, complete ordinary supervisor functions to support and manage staff, provide high level customer service to public water systems that are regulated by a specific rule, and pick up specific rule administrator duties when a member of their team is out of the office. How does it get done? Supervise personnel who implement and enforce specific provisions of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) to verify that all assigned public water systems provide drinking water that meets applicable quality and safety standards Direct and review staff activities related to evaluating chemical, microbiological, and treatment technique monitoring data for compliance with the New Mexico Drinking Water Regulations and ensures that each public water supply is operated and maintained in accordance with all regulatory requirements Oversee staff responsible for conducting Sanitary Surveys and conduct Sanitary Surveys in accordance with the Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP), ensuring surveys are completed at the required frequency Ensure that all required documentation, data, and information are properly maintained and made available to public water systems, the public, and other Department personnel Who are the customers? New Mexicans to protect and restore the environment Occasional contact with external Federal, State and Local regulatory bodies as well as contractors and environmental not for profit organizations Internal staff Ideal Candidate New Mexicans to protect and restore the environment Occasional contact with external Federal, State and Local regulatory bodies as well as contractors and environmental not for profit organizations Internal staff Minimum Qualification Bachelor's Degree in Physical, Natural, or Environmental Science, Soil Science, Engineering, or Chemistry and five (5) years of work experience in public/environmental health, environmental science, animal science, natural science, biological science, physical science, air quality management, engineering, chemistry, geology, hazardous waste management, wildlife management, and/or water resources. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling nine (9) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Employment Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid driver¿s license. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment. Working Conditions Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending, and reaching may be required. The position has a regular daytime work schedule but responding to acute public health threats may require work on the weekends or during non-standard work hours. This position will be required to be able to operate a vehicle, basic water chemistry testing devices and to occasionally be outdoors, to walk, lift up to 75 pounds, carry up to 90 pounds, and climb ladders.
