CROSS CONNECTION COMPLIANCE TECHNICIAN
(DOQ) Position Number 123456 FLSA Status Non-Exempt Full Time/Part Time Full Time Salary $20.44 - $28.85 Hourly (Depending on Qualifications) Job Summary Under limited supervision performs technical work in the implementation of the Cross Connection Control and Backflow Prevention program to prevent contamination of BPUB's potable water as required by local, state, and federal regulations. Responsibilities Cross Connection Compliance Technician Completes Customer Service Inspections at residential, industrial, and commercial facilities and establishments to identify and prevent cross connections, potential contaminants and illegal lead materials as per Federal, State, and City rules and regulations. Follows up with customers regarding inspection deficiencies. Establishes and maintains an effective record keeping system for the cross connection and backflow program. Assists in reviewing building plans such as fire service connections, lawn sprinkler and irrigation systems for the proper placement of backflow assemblies to eliminate cross connections or potential cross connection. Acts as a liaison between the department, residential, industrial, and commercial customers in regards to cross connection and provides training to the public concerning the backflow prevention program. May assist in the preparation and implementation of water utility projects. May assist in the implementation of the Cross Connection Control and Backflow Prevention Program. Completes other job duties as assigned. Senior Cross Connection Compliance Technician (in addition to all duties listed above) Conducts inspections and approves backflow prevention equipment for residential, commercial, and industrial properties to ensure compliance with BPUB's Cross Connection Control and Backflow Prevention Program, engineering standards, and City of Brownsville (COB) ordinances ensuring equipment protects the city's potable water supply from contamination. Conducts testing, repairs, and replacements of backflow prevention equipment according to BPUB cross connection control and backflow prevention programs. Prepares and sends annual testing notification letters to customers in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations and follows up with customers regarding inspection deficiencies. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge important to perform the functions of the job include: Thorough knowledge of construction plans and specifications and of regulations relating to public utilities. Knowledge of technical principles and practices of water utilities. Knowledge of engineering, drafting and intermediate mathematics. Knowledge of engineering principles and of modern engineering practices and procedures as applied to general public works and public utilities operations. Knowledge of general safety practices. Skills important to perform the functions of the job include: Effective communication skills to explain processes and develop clear and accurate written reports. Skill in reading blueprints, sketches, and drawings. Effective oral and written communication skills in English; bilingual in English and Spanish preferred. Skill in working with others to achieve goals or improvement objectives. Skill in the use of personal computers and software. Abilities important to perform the functions of the job include: Ability to read and interpret a variety of blueprints, plans and specifications applicable to water utility projects. Ability to perform technical computations, to make estimates and to compile engineering data and statistics. Ability to prepare and maintain records as well as to collect and report data. Education & Experience Requirements High School Diploma or GED and two (2) years of experience in public utilities, water/wastewater operations and/or inspections, or a related field are required. An equivalent combination of appropriate education and relevant experience may substitute for the minimum experience requirement. Senior Cross Connection Compliance Technician One (1) additional year of progressively responsible experience is required. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Requires a valid Texas Driver License or receipt of a valid Texas Driver's License within 90 days of relocation to Texas and a safe driving record, as measured by company policy. Must obtain a Customer Service Inspector's license issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality within two (2) years of appointment. Senior Cross Connection Compliance Technician Requires a Customer Service Inspector's license and a Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester's License issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
