Deputy Fire Chief

Under the direction of the Fire Chief, the Deputy Fire Chief plans, directs and reviews the activities and operations of the Fire Department including emergency medical services, fire suppression, prevention, technical services and administration, emergency management, and the Fireman's Relief Association. The Deputy Chief performs the duties of the Fire Chief in the event of the Fire Chief's extended leave unless otherwise directed by the Governing Body. This is a nonexempt position under the FLSA. This employee is crossed trained in all facets of the department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Assumes management, professional leadership and direction of the fire department. Develops and administers standard operating policies and procedures. Coordinates activities with other departments. Assigns work activities, projects and programs. Trains, motivates and evaluates departmental personnel, provides training and counseling, evaluates performance, corrects deficiencies, and implements discipline. Manage recruitment efforts and maintain a volunteer base. Plans and oversee public education activities. Responds to major emergency medical incidents and fire alarms and direct emergency medical and fire suppression activities. Operates specialized emergency communications equipment, department vehicles, apparatus, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, and other equipment. Plans and directs response of crisis management activities, disaster preparedness training, and emergency plans and procedures for natural, wartime, or technological disasters. Stays abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of emergency medical care and fire prevention, suppression and operations. Represents the city in relationships with the public and other organizations. Tactfully and professionally responds to requests and inquiries from the public. Prepares clear and concise technical and departmental activity reports and records. Interprets and applies departmental policies, procedures, laws, and regulations. Communicates clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
