Job Description

About the Role The Assistant Fire Marshal performs responsible technical and administrative work involving fire inspections of residential, commercial, institutional, and public structures to ensure compliance with state fire codes and to prevent fire hazards. This position plays a key role in safeguarding life and property through proactive code enforcement, plan review, fire prevention education, and coordination with suppression and prevention staff. The Assistant Fire Marshal conducts inspections under Volume V of the North Carolina State Building Code and applies professional judgment in interpreting and enforcing fire regulations. The role involves extensive public contact and requires the ability to enforce codes firmly, impartially, and with tact. Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments and may include exposure to hazardous conditions associated with construction sites, fire hazards, and environmental extremes. Work is reviewed through observation, discussion, and evaluation of records, reports, and public acceptance of enforcement activities. Conduct inspections of new and existing residential, institutional, and commercial structures to identify fire hazards and code violations. Interpret and apply state fire codes and related building codes. Review site plans, blueprints, and specifications for new construction, renovations, and demolitions. Evaluate fire protection systems including fire alarms, sprinkler systems, standpipes, hydrant placement, fire department access, chemical storage, and related safety features. Notify responsible parties of code deficiencies and required corrective actions; perform re-inspections to verify compliance. Maintain detailed records of inspection activities; compile reports and program statistics. Provide guidance regarding fire prevention strategies and code compliance. Coordinate inspection findings with pre-fire plans prepared by suppression and prevention personnel. Participate in fire training activities and may assist with fire education programs or fire investigations related to cause and origin. Perform other duties as assigned. High School Diploma or GED. Training in building construction and/or fire suppression, prevention, or inspection. Five (5) to seven (7) years of related experience; or An equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Requirements Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver's License. Possession of North Carolina State certification for enforcement of fire codes at Level III, or the ability to obtain within four (4) years of hire. Possession of North Carolina certification in Arson Investigation, or the ability to obtain within five (5) years of hire.
