Job Description

The Deputy Fire Marshal conducts operations within the Fire Investigation Division, the Fire Prevention Division, or Fire Inspection Division, wherein this role directs, manages, and supports emergency operations. Work involves investigations and analysis of fire and explosion scenes to determine origin and cause. This position schedules and conducts fire inspections, plan reviews, and makes recommendations for corrective action. Please note - you must upload one of the following before completing this application: Standard Fire Inspector Certificate or Probationary Fire Inspector Certificate OR Pre-Qualification letter from the North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal (NCOSFM) The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description. Schedules and performs state-mandated fire safety inspections, re-inspections, new construction inspections, and inspections for scheduled blasting, special events, pyrotechnics, and so forth Interprets provisions of fire codes to building owners, managers and employers. Conducts plan reviews to ensure compliance with fire codes and provides technical expertise, advice and guidance related to code compliance questions and interpretations Communicates with and provides customer support to permit applicants and other stakeholders. Coordinates reviews with other departments and recommends alternatives and solutions for maintaining compliance Issues summons for fire hazards not corrected on subsequent inspections and enforces code when responsible party fails to cooperate Conducts fire and building property damage inspections Performs administrative task related to data analysis, data entry, billing, reporting, and customer communications Provides educational training related to fire and life safety procedures and practices
Education and Experience:
High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency and 3 to 5 years' experience in training, fire suppression, fire investigation, fire protection, fire prevention, or a related field OR Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted
Licensing and Certifications:
Fire Inspector Level I Certification Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
Knowledge of:
Principles and practices of fire science Methods and practices of arson investigations Methods and practices of fire and life safety inspections Fire protection systems and related safety equipment Applicable federal, state, or local laws, codes and regulations Standard practices, methods and materials of assigned work Specialized equipment relevant to the area of assignment Building construction requirements Modern office practices and procedures including the use of standard office equipment and computer applications such as word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications Skill in: Performing fire investigations and reporting findings Performing technical plans review and inspections to determine building system code compliance Gathering data, analyzing findings and applying logic and reason Utilizing a computer and relevant software applications Customer service Public speaking Critical thinking and problem-solving Ability to: Read and understand blueprints Demonstrate diplomacy in interactions with the public and coworkers Protect confidentiality of information Develop and implement public education programs Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports

Medium:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Work Environment:
Work is typically performed in an o ffice or similar indoor environment, outdoor environment, street environment (near moving traffic), and in a vehicle . Employees may occasionally work in a construction site, confined space, warehouse environment, or shop environment.
Work Exposures:
Work in this position does not require frequent environmental exposures. Employees may occasionally be exposed to individuals who are hostile or irate, individuals with known violent backgrounds, extreme cold (below 32 degrees), extreme heat (above 100 degrees), communicable diseases, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals or substances, or loud noises (85+ decibels average over 8-hour working day such as heavy trucks, jack hammers, leaf blowers, lawn mowers, construction).
