Job Description
SUMMARY OF POSITION
The Inspector II is a key member of Summit Fire & EMS (SFE), working under the direct supervision of the Division Chief of CRD. This role performs specialized fire prevention duties, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal fire prevention standards, codes, laws, and ordinances. The Inspector II conducts inspections, reviews building plans, and assists with public education programs to promote fire prevention and safety. This position requires a high level of technical expertise, professionalism, and the ability to interact effectively with the public, contractors, and other stakeholders.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Permit Processing and Plan Review:
Provide information to applicants and the public regarding permit processes and fire code requirements. Review building plans and permit documents to ensure compliance with fire prevention laws and codes.Inspections and Compliance:
Conduct inspections and re-inspections of new and existing commercial, industrial, and residential buildings to identify fire hazards and ensure compliance with fire codes. Perform acceptance tests for fire protection systems, including alarms, sprinklers, and extinguishers. Conduct defensible space and burn permit inspections. Investigate complaints regarding fire code violations and recommend corrective actions.Documentation and Enforcement:
Prepare detailed fire inspection reports, hazardous material summaries, and other correspondence. Document violations of laws, ordinances, and safety hazards, and communicate with property owners to resolve issues. Conduct follow-up assessments to verify compliance with fire codes and applicable statutes.Public Education and Training:
Assist with public education programs, including fire prevention and life-safety classes for schools, community groups, contractors, and architects. Provide training for fire personnel on fire and building codes and commercial inspection practices.Fire Investigation:
Aid in the investigation of fire scenes to determine causes and damages.General Duties:
Perform maintenance of stations and grounds to ensure cleanliness and safety. Attend regular training sessions to stay current on fire prevention methods and codes. Perform other duties as assigned.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Advanced knowledge of fire prevention codes, inspection techniques, and fire protection systems. Ability to review and interpret building plans. Maintain composure and professionalism under stress. Demonstrate integrity, enthusiasm, and loyalty to the department and community. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to explain complex codes and regulations clearly to the public. Ability to manage multiple responsibilities, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines. Ability to make sound decisions in high-pressure situations and resolve conflicts effectively. Foster a positive, collaborative work environment and support team members in achieving shared goals. Proactively identify and address issues without direct supervision. Always maintain a professional demeanor and appearance.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
3-5 years of experience in fire prevention inspection, fire protection, building inspection, or plan review. Must possess or obtain within 30 days: Valid Colorado driver's licenseICS-200 NIMS-700 CPR/AED
certification Must obtain and maintain the following certifications: SFE Inspector I Colorado Division of Fire Prevention & Control (CO DFPC) Fire Suppression Systems Inspector ICC InspectorII CO DFPC
Fire InspectorII PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
May require evening and weekend availability for community events and emergencies. Office and fieldwork environments with occasional exposure to hazardous situations. Mobility to move to and from various points within the facilities and the outdoor environment; Ability to lift and/or carry 10-40 lbs. Ability to sit, type, copy, reach overhead and reach away from body. Ability to produce information in written form. This position may be filled at either the Fire Inspector II or Fire Inspector III level, depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
