Job Description

Department Fire Location Fire Department Salary Weekly Pay Range:
$1,000.83 - $1,681.78 Open Date 05/21/2026 Close Date 06/24/2026 Description PURPOSE The purpose of this classification, under general supervision, is to perform skilled technical and inspection work in the areas of fire investigation and fire prevention. Position is responsible for ensuring codes compliance to ensure public safety through inspection of new and existing structures. Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, & EXPERIENC E
High school diploma or acceptable equivalency diploma; supplemented by three (3) to five (5) years' experience that provides broad knowledge of construction principles and familiarity with fire inspection/protection standards as related to buildings and structures; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must possess Fire Safety Inspector I or II Certification and valid State of Florida Driver's License. Certifications and/or licenses must remain valid for period of employment in this classification.
JOB DESCRIPTION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. Conducts fire safety inspections of new and existing buildings. Conducts a variety of plans review (i.e., fire code plans, fire sprinkler plans, hood system plans, paint booth system plans, building plans for underground petroleum tanks.). Issues various permits (i.e., fire sprinklers, fire alarms, hood systems, paint booth systems, building permits for underground petroleum tanks). Approves tent permits; inspects tents upon installation. Conducts inspections on all permits issued; performs follow up inspections with regard to noncompliance, violations, and/or complaints. Conducts licensing inspections for day care centers, nursing homes, and various other institutions providing services to the public. Issues notices of violation and/or stop work orders. Prepares code board cases; presents cases as directed. Maintains various records and reports (i.e., inspections performed, permits issued, fire operations incident logs, conditions found, actions taken). Incident reporting. Interprets fire codes in response to inquiries from architects, engineers, contractors, and the general public. Provides assistance and support with respect to the investigation and determination of the cause and origin of fires.

Situational Reasoning Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness, and creativity required in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria. ADA Compliance Physical Ability Tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds). Sensory Requirements Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors. Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination. Some tasks require oral communications ability. Environmental Factors Tasks risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, fumes, and/or toxic/strong chemicals or agents.
P ERFORMANCE INDICATORS
The work performance of non-supervisory personnel of the City of Daytona Beach is routinely evaluated according to the performance criteria outlined herein: Knowledge of Job Has thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures, and policies of the City of Daytona as such pertain to the performance of the essential duties of a Fire Inspector. Has considerable knowledge of municipal fire protection, engineering design, and planning, with respect to facility operations, construction, and maintenance. Has considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, procedures, materials, and equipment applicable to establishing and maintaining fire protection standards in accordance with regulatory standards. Has thorough knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards, and regulations pertaining to the essential duties and responsibilities of the position. Has considerable knowledge of the organization of the department, and of related departments and agencies. Clearly understands the occupational hazards and safety precautions required to perform the essential functions of the work. Has thorough knowledge of terminology and related professional languages used within the department as such pertain to work responsibilities. Knows how to maintain cooperative and effective relationships with intra- and interdepartmental personnel, as well as any external entities with which position interacts. Quality of Work Maintains high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities. Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility. Maintains high quality communication and interaction with internal and external entities with whom the position interacts.
