Job Description

Join our team and become our new full-time
FIRE INSPECTOR
in the Community Development department. This position performs work of moderate difficulty in the area of fire prevention. The Fire Inspector examines and monitors existing structures and buildings under construction for fire equipment, fire hazards, or inadequate fire protection; ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal fire codes; and reviews building plans for fire and life safety, design elements, and code compliance. Some info about the position… Reviews building plans for compliance with life safety, fire safety, detection and suppression systems, codes, and requirements. Conducts required inspections and re-inspections for permit code compliance; inspects buildings under construction for adequate fire protection, including sprinkler systems, detection devices, portable extinguishers, exit signs, emergency lighting, and fire wall construction. Maintains current records for all businesses on all life safety systems, including fire alarm systems and sprinkler/suppression systems; receives and investigates complaints of fire hazards and prepares reports recommending corrective measures. Follows up on Fire Department notifications of false alarms, including those monitored by RED center; determines compliance with applicable code requirements and follows through to ensure hazard abatement. Performs inspections of existing buildings for fire hazards and fire code violations; prepares detailed reports and re-inspects to verify that violations have been corrected. Qualified candidates should… Hold a high school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of five years of experience as a fire inspector, plans examiner, or in a related field. Possess certification through the State Fire Marshal or ICC Fire Inspector I (required); ICC Fire Inspector II, Fire Plans Examiner, and/or Residential Fire Sprinkler Inspector/Plans Examiner(preferred.) Demonstrate knowledge of fire inspection methods, fire suppression and alarm systems, construction methods, sources and types of fire hazards, and municipal and state regulations relating to fire prevention. Possess the ability to read and interpret building construction plans and specifications; proficiency in Microsoft Office applications required; experience with Tyler/ Energov Permitting System strongly preferred. Demonstrate excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with businesses, contractors, the public, other departments, and elected officials. Possess a valid driver's license and ability to drive. Pay, benefits, and more… Represented by AFSCME Council 31/Local 2953 Starting pay rate for all new hires is $46.49 per hour (the full pay range is $46.49 - $60.82 per hour)as determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Typical hours are Monday - Friday,8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with occasional overtime, evening, and weekend hours Paid leave. Health insurance.
