Job Description

The St. Louis Park Fire Department is seeking a motivated and service-oriented individual to serve as a Fire Inspector I within the Prevention Division. This position is responsible for supporting the department's fire prevention, community risk reduction, inspection, investigation, and public education efforts. The ideal candidate will possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, technical knowledge related to fire prevention and life safety systems, and a demonstrated commitment to professional development and lifelong learning. Candidates should be capable of working independently, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, and representing the department in a professional manner. This position performs a variety of fire prevention functions including inspections, code enforcement, public education, fire investigations, and plan review support. The Fire Inspector I also assists with community risk reduction initiatives and provides technical expertise related to fire and life safety systems. During emergencies or periods of line staff unavailability, fire prevention personnel may perform firefighting, EMS, or other assignments as directed and assigned. Below is a tentative timeline for the recruitment process:

Week of June 8th A cover letter (and resume) is required for application consideration. Performs all functions of a firefighter and additional duties as assigned. Applies and interprets Fire and Building Codes, Electrical and Mechanical Codes, and various ordinances and statutes dealing with matters of fire safety and fire prevention. Inspects new and existing sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, and special fire suppression systems. Conducts fire inspections of commercial occupancies, licensed daycare centers, and other regulated facilities. Handles concerns from the public regarding fire hazards and life safety concerns. Prepares, approves, and signs fire prevention orders, issues citations, and takes other actions necessary to enforce fire safety regulations. Assists with review and approval of plans and specifications for fire protection systems, building and site design, materials, and process hazards. Represents the Fire Department to the public in a professional manner. Prepares and conducts fire prevention and public education programs for schools, businesses, community groups, and the general public. Assists with preparation and delivery of fire safety information and awareness through demonstrations, training, media, or other means. Performs fire cause investigations independently or as part of a team. Conducts and maintains records of interviews, witness statements, inspection reports, and investigative reports. Investigates complaints and takes action to resolve issues in accordance with department policy and practice. Coordinates fire prevention activities with other city departments as necessary. Maintains the highest ethical standards and public trust. Performs other duties and activities as assigned. MFSCB Fire Inspector 1 MFSCB Fire Investigator and/or IAAI Fire Investigation Technician, or ability to obtain within 12 months from date of hire. MFSCB Public Fire Educator 1 Demonstrated ability to conduct fire inspections, public education activities, and related fire prevention division work Ability to effectively communicate and work with department personnel, business owners, contractors, residents, and the public. Knowledge, skills, and ability to execute all facets of the firefighter job description . Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, execute, and assess prevention programs and initiatives. Experience performing fire alarm system, fire sprinkler system, and building egress plan reviews. Experience with scene incident command and fire ground operations as it relates to pre-plan activities and plan review for fire features. Extensive experience with emergency response pre-plan activities, including property assessments and generating GIS materials. Experience directing and leading other fire staff in prevention activities.
