  • Fire Plans Examiner ( Must be obtain certification within1 year)

Fire/Arson Origin and Cause Investigations (Must obtain certification within 1 month of class opportunity) Nationally and MS State EMT Certification

It should be noted that staffing levels may not allow all of the above standards to be fulfilled initially. It is understood that these skills develop with experience and time. Performance evaluations should demonstrate improvement in each area until a satisfactory level is attained. This job description is merely a list of prevalent job performance requirements for this position and not to be considered a complete list of duties to be performed by the Fire Inspector. Inspections shall be conducted in compliance with the International Building and Fire Codes that are adopted by Southaven. Adopted codes and ordinances supersede any requirements of the standards referenced by the adopted codes. Maintain a list of existing structures located within the City of Southaven. Identify them by occupancy and whether or not fire protection systems are provided. Schedule inspections so that each assigned commercial address has at least one inspection annually. Some occupancy may require more than one inspection per year. Inspections should be scheduled to follow inspections of fire protection systems by independent companies. A copy of these inspections shall be filed utilizing electronic reports and software. Fire Inspectors should address problems, which are identified on inspections. Fire code violation complaints should be investigated in a timely manner and findings should be disclosed on an appropriate form. Burn permits shall be issued in accordance with City policy and DEQ regulations. Periodical visits should be made to insure that burning pits meet guidelines. Review drawings as assigned by supervisor. The supervisor of this office shall have primary responsibility for plan review and release for permits. The Fire Inspector shall be capable of reviewing plans prior to inspections to become familiar with the project in order to perform inspections as required. Technical questions regarding projects shall be referred to the person that released the plans for permit. This will reduce conflict and allow the individual most familiar with the project to keep track of the progress of that project. Records, inspection forms, checklists, etc., shall be completed in compliance with standard policy and filed as necessary. Investigate fire cause in accordance with NFPA 921 and Southaven SOG's. Accurate records shall be maintained. Shall represent the City and Department in a positive and professional manner. One should be careful not to get involved in matters that may conflict with this position in any way that may be detrimental to the authority represented. Must be capable to work with minimal supervision. Shall assist in fire prevention programs for various ages and groups and insure that appropriate literature and/or props are available. May be scheduled to work overtime for special events and fire investigations at the discretion of supervisors. Is expected to participate in study programs and training necessary to maintain an appropriate level of competency. These are to be determined by the Assistant Fire Marshal or Chief Officer. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned as deemed necessary. The Fire Inspector shall be under the immediate supervision of the Fire Marshal or the Assistant Fire Marshal. This shall be the first step in the chain of command.
PREREQUSITES INCLUDE
High School Diploma or recognized equivalent Minimum of (3) years' experience with fire service Ability to communicate effectively Ability to interpret and apply codes and standards in the field Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations necessary to perform work assignments effectively Shall demonstrate initiative and ability to attain acceptable levels of knowledge and training required for the position Fire Inspector I
  • IFSAC required Fire Inspector II
  • ICC required for promotion to this level Fire Inspector III Plans Examiner
  • ICC and 2 year experience as Fire Inspector II required for promotion to this level.
All candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent. All candidates will be required to pass a pre-employment DOT physical examination, drug screen, and background check, along with maintaining a valid State DL. This position requires periodic on-call status, with overtime compensation. Applications are only accepted via the City of Southaven website or at the reception desk on the first floor.
