The Fire Safety Technician II must have skills and knowledge in the maintenance and repair of life safety systems. Performs regular inspections of fire safety assets, with main focus on fire extinguishers/hydro testing and fire doors. Assists with testing and maintaining life safety equipment, smoke and sprinkler testing. Under direction, makes minor repairs to fire safety systems. Maintains records, reporting and entering data. Description Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp High School plus 3+ years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • High school graduate or GED.
  • Two years of relevant experience in fire safety systems or a related field.
  • Basic knowledge of and experience with fire safety systems.
  • Must be able to perform all tasks required of Fire Safety Tech I position.
  • Basic computer skills; able to enter data correctly and document inspections in database
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be qualified under the terms of the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.
  • Familiarity with and basic skills in all aspects of the maintenance and repair of fire safety systems including alarms and sprinkler systems.
  • Familiarity with and basic skills related to both system and component functionality.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to apply all relevant local and national codes and safety regulations related to the installation, operation and maintenance of fire safety systems. Basic knowledge of the life safety codes.
  • Ability to use filling station to recharge extinguishers.
  • Knowledge of NFPA 10 fire extinguisher standards.
  • Skill in the use of sprinkler system repair and testing tools and equipment such as plumb bobs, drills, torches, pipe threaders, bending tools, wrenches and similar.
  • Ability to follow complex written and oral assignments and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision, exercise sound judgment and have excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Must successfully complete and remain certified and compliant in all safety or trades related course work as may be required by the College.
  • Willingness to work overtime as required.
  • Customer service orientation. Must have successfully completed the following training prior to performing work to which the training relates:
  • Driver Safety- Electrical Safety related work practices
  • Lock-out/tag-out
  • Respirator training
  • Fit and Physical Examination
  • Working in confined spaces
  • Laboratory safety/hazardous waste management training
  • Asbestos awareness training
  • Bloodborne pathogen training Preferred Qualifications
  • Technical school graduate or equivalent education and experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of AV systems.
  • Skill in the use of alarm system repair and testing tools and equipment such as signal generators and voltmeters, soldering irons, screw drivers, wiring tolls and similar.
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with troubleshooting and programming fire alarm panels.

  • Inspects fire safety assets, with main focus on fire extinguishers/hydro testing and fire doors.
  • Assists with regular testing, maintaining and troubleshooting of fire safety systems, smoke and sprinkler alarms.
  • Able to make minor repairs to fire safety systems, such as replacing defective components and wiring and adjust mechanical parts.
  • Is able to follow basic schematics, wiring diagrams, or blueprints on equipment and systems.
  • Performs hydro testing and annual FE service.
  • Assists Senior Fire Safety Technicians as needed.
  • Maintains knowledge of AV systems. Sets up and monitors public address systems for special events, sporting events, and other functions, many of which are during off hours. Percentage Of Time Description Learns from Senior Technicians Learns from fire safety technicians via working with and understanding procedures.
  • For example, receives clear and concise instructions from coworkers; be educated accepting constructive input from coworkers performing work.
  • While performing maintenance work learn the procedures being taken and the reasoning behind the action.
  • Under direction, assists with testing, maintenance and troubleshooting of fire safety systems.
  • Aligns, adjusts and calibrates equipment according to manufacturer's recommendations. Percentage Of Time Description Mentorship Works with and mentors Fire Safety Tech I, explaining the procedures being performed and the reasoning behind those actions.
  • For example, provide/receive clear and concise instructions to coworkers; educate/be educated offering constructive input to coworkers performing work.
