Job Description The purpose of this position is to perform advanced technical, inspection, investigative, and code enforcement work in support of fire prevention, fire and life safety, and hazard mitigation efforts. The position is responsible for ensuring compliance with applicable fire, life safety, and building codes through plan reviews, inspections, investigations, public education, and enforcement activities that protect the safety of the community. The successful candidate will independently manage assigned projects and inspections, interpret and apply complex fire and building codes, and communicate findings and recommendations through reports, meetings, and consultations with internal and external stakeholders.
Key responsibilities include:
Conducting fire and life safety inspections of new and existing buildings, structures, and occupancies to ensure compliance with applicable codes and regulations. Performing permit and construction-related inspections and completing all required documentation, follow up actions, and enforcement activities. Reviewing and approving construction plans, blueprints, and specifications for fire protection systems, hazardous materials operations, and related life safety components. Interpreting and explaining fire and building code requirements to architects, engineers, contractors, business owners, and the general public. Investigating fires, hazardous incidents, environmental crimes, explosive devices, and other significant safety concerns to determine origin, cause, and potential criminal activity. Conducting inspections in response to citizen complaints, reported code violations, and other public safety concerns. Supporting criminal investigations and legal proceedings by documenting findings, preparing reports, and providing testimony when required. Developing and delivering fire prevention and life safety education programs through public presentations, drills, inspections, and community outreach initiatives. Participating in staff meetings, technical discussions, professional development opportunities, and specialized training to maintain current knowledge of industry standards, codes, and best practices. Maintaining accurate records, reports, and correspondence related to inspections, investigations, permits, and enforcement activities. Performing other related duties as assigned. VOCATIONAL / EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT
: Requires high school diploma or GED and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education in fire science or a closely related field.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES
: Requires a valid driver's license or commercial driver's license (CDL) and driving record in compliance with City Driving Standards . Must possess or obtain the following certifications: Firefighter II, Virginia Department of Fire Programs Medical certification as mandated at the time of hire Hazmat Operations EVOC, Department of Fire Programs Fire Inspector 1031, Virginia Department of Fire Programs within 6 months of hire CORE module, Virginia Department of Fire Programs
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of one year of related, full-time equivalent experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.
