Job Description

The City of Valdez Fire Department is seeking a motivated, driven, and team-oriented person to serve in the role of Firefighter/EMT. This is a full-time, non-exempt, benefited position that works a Kelly Shift schedule. Under close supervision of the Fire Company Officer, the Firefighter/EMT performs firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical duties as required to control emergency incidents. NFPA 1582
compliant physical exam after conditional offer of employment Ability to pass a comprehensive drug panel screening after conditional offer of employment Preferred Qualifications IFSAC/Pro Board Firefighter 2 Certified State of Alaska
EMT 3/EMT-A
Certified Work is performed in internal and external environments with exposure to inclement weather and varying temperatures. May be exposed to hazardous materials, dangerous machinery and potential physical harm when responding to fire and rescue emergencies. Must maintain a level of physical fitness to meet Department standards.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
: Responds to emergencies and performs fire suppression, rescue, hazmat, and emergency medical duties as required. Operates and inspects emergency, fire, rescue, medical and life saving tools and equipment. Maintains Fire Department facilities, equipment, and supplies; cleans, repairs, and returns equipment to service after use. Assists in the maintenance of required departmental and emergency response records. Performs preventive maintenance of vehicles and equipment. Assists with emergency medical and fire training for volunteer emergency responders. Periodically coordinate single resource activities on the emergency scene and during training. Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS
:
Knowledge of:
Fire Department policies and procedures. Firefighting and emergency services techniques and procedures, and related safety issues. Basic knowledge of local, state, and national industrial standards and practices.
Skill in:
The safe operation of fire and emergency vehicles and equipment. Performing firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical duties. Performing maintenance and repair of firefighting vehicles, facilities, and equipment. Leading and directing small groups during emergency operations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma/GED IFSAC Firefighter 1 Certification State of Alaska Emergency Medical Technician 1 Certification. Successfully pass an NFPA entry level medical exam
PREFERRED
IFSAC Firefighter II State of Alaska Emergency Medical Technician II Certification. One (1) year of municipal firefighting experience
SPECIAL EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS UTILIZED
Emergency response vehicles, specialized fire department and personal protective equipment, rescue equipment and emergency medical tools and gear.
