Job Description

FIRE DEPARTMENT TYPE OF RECRUITMENT OPEN COMPETITIVE - FIRE EMERGENCY EXAM NUMBER 38250B-FR APPLICATION FILING PERIOD
Applications will be accepted from Monday, April 20, 2026 at 8:00 a.m. (PT) until Friday, May 1, 2026 before 5:00 p.m. (PT). The LA County Board of Supervisors has unanimously ratified a Proclamation of Local Emergency in response to the windstorms and wildfires , including the Palisades and Eaton Fires, that have devastated communities across the County. We are looking for qualified and passionate individuals to assist the County in mobilizing resources and support needed to help our residents recover and rebuild. If you are looking for a new career that will directly benefit the population of LA County, this may be the opportunity for you. The Los Angeles County Fire Department is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency Career Development Intern vacancies related to this unprecedented natural disaster. Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment. During your initial work period, you will be assessed on your work performance. This assessment will be weighted 100%. Those who successfully pass the assessment will be considered for permanent appointment to Career Development Intern. Learns the proper techniques and procedures for clearing firebreaks, trails, and access routes through classroom instruction and field and on-the-job training. Participates in field training to learn the proper procedure in assisting engine companies lay hose lines and performing related tasks required during wildland fire suppression operations. Learns to perform the manual labor required in emergency responses, such as filling and placing sandbags, digging drainage canals, and demolishing unsafe structures following natural disasters. Learns to perform the various support responsibilities that include clerical duties, small equipment repair and maintenance, sewing, and assisting with vegetation management, fuels reduction, and risk mitigation projects in support of departmental and contract city operations. Participates in a physical training program. May drive automotive equipment to and from work sites in the performance of duties.
REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY
:
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
: Completion of the Los Angeles County Justice, Care, and Opportunity Department's (JCOD's) Los Angeles County Training Center (LACTC) fire support program or a program deemed equivalent by
JCOD LACTC. OTHER REQUIREMENTS
: Applicants must be able to perform the essential functions of this classification, with or without a reasonable accommodation. LICENSE Some assignments may require a valid California Class C Driver License to perform job-related essential duties, or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions. You MUST meet the above requirement(s) in order to be appointed to fill any vacancies related to this recruitment.

This class involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. It includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in Safety positions.
EXAMINATION CONTENT
: During your initial work period, the appointing department will evaluate your performance. Those who achieve a passing score on this evaluation will be considered for permanent appointment.
