Job Description

The Morongo Valley Fire Department Reserve Firefighter (EMT or Paramedic) program provides Fire Academy graduates an opportunity to apply their acquired skills and gain insight or licensed Paramedics on the job firefighter I training while preparing for a fire service career. Reserve Firefighters respond to emergency calls, conduct mini-drills and skills demonstrations, maintain apparatus, equipment and fire stations, participate with training and public education, and perform miscellaneous duties in accordance with the Reserve Firefighter job description. Examples of Duties Respond to fire and emergency alarms. Perform all phases of fire suppression work. Perform rescue, ventilation, overhaul, salvage, and clean-up activities at fire scene. Place fire hoses, set ladders, operate fire streams, ventilate, and enter burning structures to extinguish fires and rescue victims. Operate pneumatic and auxiliary equipment such as generators or pumps. Respond to hazardous materials incidents. Provide emergency and non-emergency medical care and assist Paramedics with advanced life support as needed. Prepare, submit, and maintain electronic and hand-written reports on fire suppression activities, incidents, and accidents, emergency medical service provision, and other job-related information. Perform station maintenance, maintain station living quarters, grounds, and exterior areas in a clean and orderly condition. Operate, inspect, and maintain equipment used to carry out job responsibilities equipment. Perform minor repairs on apparatus or equipment inside and outside of facilities. Orders necessary supplies. Conduct and participate in training exercises. Develop skills in fire suppression, medical aid, apparatus operation, rescue operations, hazardous materials response, and other related areas. Conduct classes on relevant levels of emergency medical service delivery to department Firefighter/Paramedic Updated Feb.07, 2024 Morongo Valley Fire Department 2 of 4 and community members, as needed. Maintain electronic and hand-written records and logs of work in-progress and completed. Prepare statistical and analytical reports, as required. Stay current on new innovations relative to firefighting, fire prevention and emergency medical services. Follow the Chain of Command. Participate in testing of a variety of department equipment, including but not limited to fire hose, ladders, fire pumps, breathing apparatus and other job-related equipment. Participate in public education activities related to Fire Department functions and Community Risk Reduction initiatives and techniques. Supports the mission of the MVFD. Education and/or
Experience:
18 years of age or older Valid California Driver's License with a good driving record Valid CPR Certification. Valid Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-1) or Paramedic certification from the State of California. Certificate of completion from a State of California accredited Fire Academy or acceptance into the on-the-job training program. Successful completion of the Physical Agility Test (Biddle) or Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) within twelve (12) months from date of application submission. Ability to commit to 4 (24) hour shifts per month as a Reserve Firefighter. Ability to commit to a 2-year on-the-job training program working a minimum of 4 (24) hour shifts per month. Required Documentation at time of online application submission : Valid Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-1) or Paramedic certification from the State of California. Certificate of completion from a State of California accredited Fire Academy. Successful completion of the Physical Agility Test (Biddle) or Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) within twelve (12) months from date of application submission. Valid CPR Certification. EXAMINATION PROCESS AND TESTING COMPONENTS I.
Application Submission & Review (Pass/Fail): Applicants must complete and submit an official Morongo Valley employment application. Applications will be reviewed to determine compliance with the minimum qualifications, and those qualified will be invited to participate in the testing process. Candidates will be notified via email of their eligibility to participate.

Written Exam (Pass/Fail): This component will assess the candidate's entry level Firefighting and EMS knowledge, education, experience, and overall preparation to perform in the position. III. Oral Board Examination (Pass/Fail): This component will assess the candidate's knowledge, education, experience, and overall preparation to perform in the position.
SELECTION
Reserve Firefighter selection based on combination of interview, and review of physical Agility certification. Selected candidate(s) will be required to successfully complete a medical evaluation and Live Scan fingerprinting.
TRAINING PERIOD
Reserve Firefighters with fire academy training will be eligible to be assigned to a shift upon completion of a 1 day mini-training tower which will include Morongo Valley Fire Department orientation, roles and expectations lecture, basic equipment orientation, and skills training. Paramedics who are hired for the on-the-job training program will be required to attend an 80 hour training academy hosted by the Morongo Valley Fire Department to be trained on the basic firefighting equipment and skills prior to being assigned to a shift.
