Job Description
To drive, operate and maintain fire fighting apparatus and equipment; to respond to fire alarms, emergency calls and non-emergency calls to protect life and property; to conduct and participate in fire training, fire prevention, public education, station and equipment maintenance activities; to assist in all phases of fire suppression; and to perform a variety of duties relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Receives general supervision from assigned Fire Captain or higher level staff.ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS
-- Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:Essential Functions :
1. Drives, operates and maintains all fire fighting and suppression apparatus and equipment; places apparatus in operation; lays hose; calculates and monitor hydraulic conditions; directs engine hook-up; sets up and adjusts controls to ensure proper water flow; operates aerial ladder trucks; stabilizes truck; maneuvers and extends retracting ladder; performs routine and minor repairs as needed including pumping apparatus and aerial ladders. 2. Responds to fire alarms and emergency calls to protect life and property; assist in all phases of fire suppression; ventilates and enters burning structures to extinguish fires and rescue victims; operates pneumatic and auxiliary equipment such as generators and pumps; provides emergency medical service as needed; responds to non-emergency calls for service as necessary. 3. Operates and maintains fire station and associated equipment; maintains surrounding grounds; initiates orders for supplies and repairs; writes specifications for safety clothing and equipment. 4. Participates in testing all department equipment such as hoses, ladders, nozzles, ropes, protective breathing apparatus and protective clothing. 5. Performs uniform fire code inspections at engine company level; assists in the enforcement of fire prevention codes and ordinances; conducts fire prevention inspections of businesses and schools; conducts investigations of fire scenes to determine the origin and cause of fires. 6. Prepares, submits and maintains reports on fire suppression activities, incidents, apparatus maintenance and inventory. 7. Participates in training exercises; develops skills in fire suppression, medical aid, apparatus operation, physical fitness and other related areas; provides support in the development of staff through training exercises and classroom instruction. 8. Performs salvage and overhaul operations to preserve property and remove hazards; responds to, assesses and mitigates hazardous materials incidents. 9. Maintains awareness of new development in the field of fire suppression/prevention and other fields relevant to assigned responsibilities. 10. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required. Experience and Training Guidelines Minimum requirements as a condition of hire:Experience :
Three years full-time paid experience as a Firefighter or Firefighter/Paramedic including one year with the City of Rialto Fire Department.Training :
High School diploma or GED. Licenses and Certifications Possession of a State of California Class C driver's license with Firefighter Endorsement or equivalent. Current State of California Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic certification/licensure with eligibility to work under the Inland Counties Emergency Medical Agency policies. California State Fire Marshal's Office Proof of Firefighter I certification or successful completion of the probationary period is contingent upon obtaining Firefighter l certification. Proof of Firefighter Il certification or successful completion of the probationary period is contingent upon obtaining Firefighter ll certification. Environmental Conditions :
Emergency fire fighting environment; hazards of emergency driving; exposure to airborne and bloodborne pathogens, heat, noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, radiant energy, toxic materials, inclement weather conditions; work at heights on scaffolding and ladders and with water; work in confined spaces.Physical Conditions :
Essential functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for heavy or moderate or light lifting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling; walking, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time; operating motorized equipment and vehicles.Knowledge of :
Procedures and equipment used in modern fire fighting and emergency medical response. Operation, use and maintenance of pump engines, fire apparatus and other fire equipment. Principles of fire apparatus hydraulics. Principles of providing emergency care at the basic life support level. Methods and techniques of handling hazardous materials. Principles and practices of modern fire suppression and prevention. Methods and techniques of public relations and instruction related to fire suppression and prevention. Geography and water systems of the City and surrounding areas. Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations governing fire prevention and aircraft rescue and fire fighting services. Ability to : Drive, operate and maintain associated fire suppression and emergency medical response vehicles, apparatus and equipment. Participate in fire fighting and emergency response activities. Perform a variety of fire suppression activities. Interpret and apply applicable Federal, State and local policies, laws and regulations governing fire fighting. Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public. Provide public information and education regarding fire prevention. Prepare a variety of technical and operational reports. Observe and follow safe fire fighting and work practices. Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing and spreadsheet applications. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Maintain mental capacity which allows for effective interaction and communication with others. Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities. Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, writing and operating assigned equipment.Application Procedure:
