Job Description
Firefighter/Paramedics perform tasks necessary to preserve the health and safety of the public in fire and non-fire situations including providing advanced life support to patients who are victims of trauma and medical emergencies. Serve as an integral member of a team during all functions of the department.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Respond to emergency calls for fire suppression, emergency medical care, rescue, and hazardous materials incidents Safely performs basic to specialized life-saving functions including triage, diagnosis, treatment of patients, and communications with local hospitals on advanced treatment for patients, transportation of patients, hospital destination determination and priority setting for multiple patient incidents. Performs activities in specialized areas of assignment including, but not limited to building pre-planning, fire investigation, report writing, water supply, hazardous materials, and wildland response. Assist in maintaining emergency vehicles including inspecting, cleaning and servicing of equipment, tools, facilities, grounds. Request recommendations on needed repairs. Performs administrative duties including report writing, data storage, and retrieval and maintaining open communication lines, both verbally and orally. Types of communication including receiving and relaying fire calls and alarms; radio transmissions, using pagers, using telephones and cellular phones, and creating written communications. Conducts and participates in drills and training exercises; develops skills in fire suppression, medical aid, apparatus operations and other related areas. Participates in fire prevention and public education activities. Maintain all required certifications. Required PT during shift Documents daily truck and equipment checks. Includes accurate documentation of all controlled substance medications. Ensure that the ambulance is always ready to respond. Appropriately and promptly document all patient reports. This is done preferably right after the call is complete but should be done before leaving the shift unless permission is obtained from the EMS Captain. This includes all required paperwork being completed and signed. Ability to obtain and maintain DFPD Crew Lead Medic status Probationary period will be applied when the member is EMT-P certified, willing to perform, but not yet authorized by the EMS Medical Director to perform the crew leader level.KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge of standard firefighting strategy and tactics Knowledge of EMS strategy and tactics Knowledge of DFPD district geography and boundaries. Knowledge of DFPD apparatus, medical and firefighting equipment. Knowledge of DFPD rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Skill in communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, officers, supervisor, other professionals, and the general public sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction and form mutually beneficial networks. Comply with HIPAA requirements Knowledge of NERIS Incident Reporting System Knowledge of and ability to work within theICS/NIMS
system Provide direction and supervision as a lead medic during EMS incidents.QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED) IFSAC Firefighter I (State of Colorado) State of Colorado EMT-ParamedicACLS PALS
Hazmat Operations or higher - IFSAC CertificationS-130/190 L-180 IS-100, 200, 700, 800
Valid State Driver's License CPR for the professional rescuer (or approved equivalent) Must pass and maintain a yearly DFPD assessment and physical as stipulated in the DFPD wellness and fitness policy to perform the duties, activities, and requirementsPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must possess the ability to work in high noise, low and extreme light, dusty, dirty, wet, freezing, high heat, high vibration, confined spaces, high and unstable environments.Very Heavy Work:
Exerting up to 150 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must comply with the organization's wellness and fitness policy and remain qualified as an operational responder as defined byNFPA 1580
guidelines Must maintain Response 1 capabilities. Durango Fire Protection District is expanding and building a new station that will be open in 2027. To prepare, we are adding staffing to be able to support this new station. This job posting is for multiple openings. Job posting will be open through May 22, 2026 at 1200 MT . If you are selected for an interview, the process will be in-person in Durango, Colorado, the week of June 1, 2026 .
